I was able to do 3.6 on stock cooling and stock voltages on my i7 920 C0 and MSI X58 Platinum.
Try using a smaller CPU multiplier with a higher BLCK so that it'll produce less heat. I've seen a lot of people OC the i7 on the Extreme Overclocking Forums and a lot of them show that higher BLCK with lower CPU multiplier can get you higher stable speeds and less temps.
Stock voltages? What are they? All my voltages are set to auto.I was able to do 3.6 on stock cooling and stock voltages on my i7 920 C0 and MSI X58 Platinum.

I just want to go to 3.2Ghz for the moment. I can get 3.2 by turning off turbo mode (this puts the multiplier to 20) and increasing the bclk to 160. This would give me 3.2Ghz. I'm just wondering if it's okay to do this and leave the voltages set to auto?I dont think you need to touch the voltages for 3.2Ghz, its just those higher overclocks, where stabality is an issue, but im sure you won't be aiming for those crazy high overclocks yet, im talking about the 4Ghz and higher.

It'll usually go to default voltages if you just increase or decrease by one. Thats what it does on mine anyways.
It's 1.1v~1.2v though.

Yes, its fine, if something goes wrong, eg; bluescreen, go back to BIOS and change it back to what it was.

I did it and everything seems okay but I've loaded CPU-Z and in the specification box it still says i7 920 @ 2.67GHz. Shouldn't this read 3.2GHZ now? How do I check my CPU speed? Please Log In to post.
