The i7 9xx cpu's offer better multi-video card systems. The X58 mobo's can run gpu's in 16x - 16x; 16x - 8x - 8x; or 8x - 8x - 8x -8x without the use of the NF200 chip. The PCIe controller for the i7-875k is located on the cpu itself and restricted to 16 total lanes whereas the controller is located in the X58 chipset for i7 9xx cpu's (with a total of 36 PCIe lanes). There are a few P55 mobos that have an NF200 chip that increase the number of PCIe lanes but they are the more expensive ones. There are a few X58 mobo's that use the NF200 chip as well and you will pay a premium price for those. For extreme gaming the i7 930 would be a better choice as it offers more memory bandwidth and better/more options for multiple video card setups (SLI & Crossfire).

You might as well get an i7 950, though, since the price difference between the two is no more than $10 now.

CPU doesn't even matter, either of those will do fine, get a good GPU.

Just about any phenom II, Icore5 (quad) and Icore7 would be fine for extreme gaming!

Gpu would be way more of a determining factor.

the main reason that i can see for people to go for an i7 (1366 socket)processor is the mobo, a lot of them support 3 cards in sli and crossfire which you cant get with AMD spec mobos (to the best of my knowledge) this is the main reason that i will be going i7 on my build just waiting for the 950 to drop over here in europe :(

I have an asus m3n ht deluxe mempipe am2-am2+ mobo, (which also supports am3 cpus)

It supports 16x-16x SLI, or 16x-8x-8x, tri sli. I think the motherboard came out as enthusiasts line around 2007, (still a great motherboard too)

ya i was going to go am3 but i cant find any board (europe ) that supports both sli and crossfire as well as having the capacity for 3 cards, im going with the GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R mobo as it has all of these and seems pretty good value, as well as that with the i7 prices coming down it isnt all that expensive to go i7 anymore (still much cheaper to go AMD though)

Oh yeah i see, mine only supports multi cards with nvidia cards. But I think my next gpu upgrade is going to be a single HD6870, (single cards still are more stable in my opinion, though multi-gpu solutions have greatly improved, I still want a single card for my next upgrade)

ya thats actually one of the reasons i didnt just jump the gun and buy the 5970 seeing as its actually two cards in one, the 6870 should be a great single card (unless ati make some big mistake somewhere or get complacent)
