Right now it's running at it's stock 2.8 GHz, and I'm not having any problems with it. However, I am thinking about trying to overclock it a bit, only to around 3.2 GHz. But, before I go check into how to do it properly, I wanted to know if only overclocking it by 0.4 GHz will really make a difference when it comes to gaming. For example, will it help run anything smoother, or will I just be wasting my time? Thanks.

3.2? Pffffffft. GIVE IT MOAR POWERZZZ I get 3.4 out of my 2.66 dual with stock cooling/voltage, surely you can do better than that.

A better way to approach this: Decide what number you are looking for, search the web to see who has used that number and what cooling set up they are using as well as their temps. ;)

Haha, yes, surely I can do better than that, but not quite yet. Since it is the first time I will be overclocking and I've only owned this PC for a week, I think it would be best if I started off slow to get a good feel for how everything works. That said, I would still like to know if overclocking makes a difference gaming-wise, as this is going to be the deciding factor on whether or not I overclock.

And, to Majorgamer, the reason I'm asking here first is because I'm not even sure if I am going to overclock or not yet. Before I get into anything, I need to know how much of a difference it will make from a gaming perspective.

Almost none. Higher clock speeds help (which is why the CD2 E8400 is still so good) but TBH it's mostly GPU work.

check there.

Actually for a better look check

There's the core i7 at 4.03 ghz and at stock with the same framerate.

It depends largely upon the game. Just because Crysis isn't effected by CPU overclocks, doesn't mean all games aren't. I found Empire Total War to be much more responsive to CPU overclocks.

True, I believe they have X3 showing much better results for the OCed processors, but most games are probably not CPU intensive like Empire and X3. At least I haven't come across any but those.

I have it up to 3.8ghz on a Zaleman 9500. Only hits like 50c on the highest gaming loads.

Hmmm... okay then, if that doesn't make much of a difference, then surely overclocking the GPU will. Might look into that instead.
