I know that i will not need the 6-cores for a few years but when the does happen i want to be ready. So what to u guys/girls think.

For some serious number crunching or workstation, then yes. For gaming, no. I would either crossfire or sli my gpu's or get a 2nd monitor for a dual monitor setup. Or better yet, just save the money until the next generation of hardware comes out. A $3000 pc today is only as good as the $1500 pc 2 years from now.

If the main purpose of this rig is gaming then don't get the 980. By the time games are optimized for a six core cpu there will be better 6 core cpu's out (and at better prices). As freesafety said only get it if you plan on doing workstation related tasks. You would be better off going Crossfire or SLI. If you already have that then maybe go for an eyefinity monitor setup (requires ATI gpu's) or Nvidia's 3d Vision (requires nvidia gpu's & monitor). Both look really good in games but can be expensive.

with intel constantly pushing the cpu performance envelope, i think it will be only 1 year before a 3000$ pc becomes 1500$

Don't get a 980 for gaming, it performs slower than a quad core for most games (slightly) because of the increased latency of the caches and what not.

If you wanna post all the specs of your new build I can recommend more accurately where you should use the money, or just start a new thread. But I would use the extra cash to upgrade whatever GPU you were thinking of getting and then crossfire them or SLI. Don't get a 980X for gaming. Your better off using the i7-930 and getting a second GPU.

I was getting ready to put together an i7 930 system, but found out that Intel is going to cut the price of the i7 950 by $270 at the end of August. I'm waiting.
