I recently got an stupid and crazy idea on my mind that on the other hand, might work out well... Here it goes:
Pre-installed games sold on designed USB-sticks that you just need to insert into your USB-port and hit "run" to play.
No downloading or installing. Just plug and play.

What do you think about the idea?

Most likely not... The problem is that by the time the USB are so cheap that game devs will use them for games (we are talking 0.1$/cd so it would require 0.1$ / usb)... Then most of the market will have moved over to downloading games.

It would probably add a significant extra cost on top of the retail cost. I'm not sure if people would be willing to pay $10 more to avoid installation? More importantly I'm not really sure that there is a demand for 'no-installation' games on the PC, it just doesn't strike me as a major problem. Also I don't know what the data transfer rate is for a USB 2.0 (or whatever the latest version is) compared to a Hard Drive?

I just thought of this too, what would happen if the drive failed? Hmm?

Same thing that happen when your CD get a scratch...

But like i said... it wont happen because its way to expensive and by the time USB are cheap (and still around) then most of the market will have moved over to Steam and stuff.

Loading times would be slow if played directly from the usb, unless its usb 3.0 which almost no one has yet, the time to transfer that data would be about the same time as an installer.

So, in short...no.

This..take the Steam platform..if all developers for the PC switched to a service like steam..piracy would take a major hit. Long way off from switching to complete digital DL though.

A hard disk, especially in RAID is (and probably always will be) many times faster then a usb stick so running from it would be senseless. Eventually there will come another storage device that might be suitable to replace CD's/DVD's.

Not really, the digital distribution market is doing pretty well but won't grow much more i bet. People will always like to physically shop and want to add the original case and manual in there shelf or drawer. I bet there will always be hard copy distribution.

There already is one suitable to replace DVD. It's called Blu-ray. And there's no need for CDs to get replaced any time soon.

Convenience of DD will trump anything that physical copies offer. I'm sure there will always be a niche market for physical copies, just like there is still a market for vinyl records, but its literally only taken 5 years for DD to surpass physical sales, and there's no reason to think that its going to slow down soon.

I honestly think it would be a waste of resources. DD is the way of pc gaming. Physical copies, will hopefully become something of the past.
