Currently have a Q6600 2.4ghz and im averaging around 40-45*C with an averaging cooling system (Im an idiot for ordering from Dell).

Anyway I was hoping to overclock it to around 3Ghz, am I risking overheating my system considering the current temps they're at now?

Doesn't matter - if you're system is a Dell, chances are you won't be able to OC - they remove those settings from the BIOS.

A general rule for all CPUS is around or below 50C is a very comfortable temperature.

for a q6600 thas actually good (it also depends on your room ambient temp i get about 50C idle now at summertime and about 40C at wintertime )

if you can get the temps around 50-60 on load then youll be sittin pretty... do not go above 65.... its teedius but run a stress test after every frequency push.

Use Prime 95 to do the stress test = http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103

I still say its normal . Depends on the stepping ( if its the old B0 stepping which has higher TDP is normal to get higher temps than G0 stepping) also depends on weather ( i live in a place where in summer temps reach about 35-42C so i dont expect to get anything less than 45C even 45 is to good considering the weather here ) and the q6600 thermal margin ( i use the official intel m/b monitoring program) is 90C ( i get 50C idle and i still have 40C room left). Yes 50C might be a bit on the high side but i say is safe ( considering of course load temps dont exceed 65C-70 although 70C might be pushing it a bit)

The old ones are B3. mine is a 2007 batch G0... i have a 30C ambiant and i idle at 40, there is no possible explanation except for a stupidly high ambient for his CPU to be that hot... the TJ Max for the Q6600 is 100C, but the thermal thereshold is at around 72C for the B3 and 65 for the G0

Anything up to 60C is perfectly fine and normal.

If you go over 60C, then you might want to get better cooling.

Actually, that's perfectly normal. I don't know where you get your information at, but 40C IDLE is perfectly normal.

i have a dell xps 420 Q6600 overclocked at 3ghz. it's overclocked using the "tape mod" search google for q6600 tape mod...or bsel tape mod. this method of overclocking doesn't require you to change bios settings. you put a very small piece of tape on a cpu pin. sounds ridiculous, but it works. i've had it overclocked with stock cooling for over a year with zero problems. coretemp currently lists my temps between 35-39 degrees C

Two words: "Stock. Cooler."

You may be overclocked and have similar temps, but you're also using an aftermarket cooler. Stop trying to compare your temps to his. 40C at stock clockspeeds is still in the realm of normality on a stock cooler, even if it is a tad high (could just be on the high side due to the ambient temperature.)

I wouldn't try overclocking it on the stock cooler, though..

My temperature stays at 48c after its been on for some time. My brother doesn't want my door to be wide open so sometimes it's getting really hot, and he start to complain how hot it is.... Anyway when i play Crysis normal i think i get about 55c+ but not over 60. Well if it gets over 60 than it's becous my door is closed. Then all the heat is in the same room all the time....
