IDK if this is the place to ask this but is this a good deal?

So my roommate wants to sell his old Mac BookPro I think from 2008.

My current laptop is an HP pavilion dv9700

250G HDD 5200rpm

1440x900 res

Nvidia gt 8400m

2.2hz core 2 duo

My roommates computer

250G HDD 7200rpm

1440x900 res

Nvidia 9400m

2.5hz core 2 duo

He wants to sell me his for $700. At the time he bought it for $2200 and I bought mine for $1400. Mines dying from GPU loss which means my screen goes black and the graphics driver constantly recovers in mid watching videos. Do you think it's a good deal or should I save up another grand for a new Macbook pro?

You could buy a brand new laptop for $700 mate... a good one at that. Never mind Mac.

Also, you could fix your laptop. Sounds like you might only be having drivers issues. That can be solved.

No. Aside from the OS your computers are the same. Find a different laptop

Well the reason I focus on MAC is that we use them at work at it would be really nice to take my final cut pro projects home and work on them. On top of that I did reasearch and it is known that my type of HP is poorly made and the heat from the cpu goes over the gpu and then to the fan slowly killing the gpu.

If your friends macbook is in excellent condition and he makes you a better offer I'd consider it. Otherwise I'd buy a new one.

The problem with buying a second hand mac, is that they degrand in value much slower than PCs. Thats the great thing about selling one though.

For $700 it sounds pretty good to me...

I'd say that $700 is worth it honestly. I'll put it like this. If I was offered that same deal right now I'd take it. Plus, if you decide you don't want it I guarantee you'd be able to find someone willing to pay you at least what you bought it for.

Well apart from the Mac being slightly more grunty, you will notice slightly faster boot times etc. Find out if its running Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6

i'd say no, i'm suuming they're both 15" latptops btw, unless you really need a mac for some reason, a new PC laptop at that price point would be much better, if your doing this to help out a friend though, i'd say offer him $500 for that laptop.

I have a 17 inch laptop which is good for 3d modeling because I need the space so I guess I'll just keep saving.

3d modeling on a laptop? you are a brave, brave man. I can't do that stuff on anything short of a 22" monitor and a computer with all the fixings.
