I have 3gb of gskill 800 ram in my PC. I have read I can only have 3.5gb total physical+gpu memory. My 8800gts 512is on its last leg(overheats unless fan is running 70% at all times. I kind of wanted a gtx260, but it has 896mb of vram. But I would more then settle for a 512mb 4870. Can anyone clear this up for me. I'm not gonna buy a64bit os until new build with Win7 in a year or two. This rig is more then enough for me at 16x10. Thx in advance guys.

You can have a 1GB video card, it's not going to lower your RAM that much. The your going to get though is between 3.15GB and 3.35GB on any 32-bit OS be it XP, Vista or Windows 7.

64-Bit is the way to go and since you already have Vista you CAN legally DL a 64-bit version of your OS as LONG as you use the product key on your PC or packaging.

When I installed my Vista from the CD i got with it, I had the option to use either 64-bit or 32-bit, Try reinstalling Vista with the 64-bit selected!

vram has nothing to do with your main system ram it won't interfere at all towards the 32-bit memory address limit

well you asked how someone could have 3.5GB and others on 3Gb 2gb+ 1GB + 512mb = 3.5GB no? (dont start counting the kb's via logical math vs teachnical math) i saw nowhere you mentioning vram had to be in that math.

Don't you guys have it backwards. The video card ram does not change the amount of system ram you have but the system ram does add to your video ram since it is a built in windows feature. So to the topic creator get whatever size video card you want.

To clear things up a little, system RAM, video RAM or anything else with RAM will use part of the memory address space in the OS. However the system RAM will be the only memory that's remapped, so you can go for the gtx 260 and that will leave you with around about 3.15gb system RAM available. Not much of a loss, so I would go for the gtx 260.

The dedicated video RAM pool has no size relationship with the system RAM in terms of size limitation, since data used for graphics/video is just copied from the system RAM to the video RAM purely for use by the GPU.

32-bit windows can have up to 4 GB in total of memory address space. That means that if you have 4 GB physical ram some of it will not be available because windows reserves memory address space for system processes and to address the video card memory. Since you only have 3 GB ram,you won't miss out much unaddressable ram as long as you have a card with less than 1 GB of vram.
