We all know that (most) prebuilt PCs are overpriced for stupid reasons like useless software and a brand logo on the case, but what about laptops? Is it possible to build a laptop yourself? I'm going to need one for college later this summer and was just interested in this subject. l0veIf laptops were as easily built by end users as desktops are then "prebuilt" laptops would also not be worth it.
Did you ever think that the people who work for these "pre-built" computer companies want/need to be paid? I'm sure you like getting a paycheck for working (if you do). That's like me asking someone to build a computer, ship it to me, provide a warranty and all I do is pay for the computer parts - while they just provided free labor and shipping for me.muirplayer
Aren't you aware that most aftermarket parts come with better warranties than pre-built PCs?? All the OEM does is provide a "1 stop shop" and charge extra. Pre-Built desktops are for people that do not have the knowledge or motivation to build their own. OEM employees paychecks have nothing to do with it. Why should I pay someone to do something i can do myself cheaper & better?

How are they supposed to get paid if no profit is made then? People getting paid has everything to do with the higher price tag.whitebooks allow you to customize the type of processor, screen, hard drive, memory, CD drive and even graphics, basically most of the components. but theres not a whole lot of selection like there is with desktop hardware and you'll have to buy the outer shell of the laptop from manufacturers who sell whitebooks.
some desktops can be a real deal while others can be built by yourself to save you anywhere from a hundred to a few hundred bucks.
I looked into it once....a while back. After pricing out the white box laptop (base config) and all the parts I wanted I found that I hadn't saved anything. It might be different now. You'd have to do your own pricing. The other problem with white boxes is that you don't have a huge selection (unlike a desktop). Only certain parts will be selectable for the white box.
