If prebuilt PCs are ripoffs, then are laptops ripoffs as well?

We all know that (most) prebuilt PCs are overpriced for stupid reasons like useless software and a brand logo on the case, but what about laptops? Is it possible to build a laptop yourself? I'm going to need one for college later this summer and was just interested in this subject.

Pre-built PCs by manufactures are generally a rip-off because they give you warranty and make you think that they're more reliable because they're a big brand. The way I see it is that I would rather build a computer by myself because it would be way easier to just replace a part then sending it all the way back to them. Yes it is possible to build a laptop yourself, but I'm not too sure about how reliable it will be, as I don't know anyone with one.

It is possible to build a laptop yourself, but you'll end up spending more than if you just went out and bought one.

Laptops are not worth it. Very hard to do, don't try...

If laptops were as easily built by end users as desktops are then "prebuilt" laptops would also not be worth it.

The problem is that laptops don't have standardized form factors like desktops. You can't just pick a laptop case and display, a laptop motherboard, a laptop CPU, and a laptop graphics card along with the RAM and hard drive like you can a desktop. If I could, though, I would without hesitation-only my case of choice would be something with Tablet PC functionality.

Did you ever think that the people who work for these "pre-built" computer companies want/need to be paid? I'm sure you like getting a paycheck for working (if you do). That's like me asking someone to build a computer, ship it to me, provide a warranty and all I do is pay for the computer parts - while they just provided free labor and shipping for me.

Aren't you aware that most aftermarket parts come with better warranties than pre-built PCs?? All the OEM does is provide a "1 stop shop" and charge extra. Pre-Built desktops are for people that do not have the knowledge or motivation to build their own. OEM employees paychecks have nothing to do with it. Why should I pay someone to do something i can do myself cheaper & better?

Laptops are not a rip off since many times they have to produce their own customized parts and stuff, such as the motherboard. And laptop CPU's by themselves are very expensive as they have to be low energy. So those $500-600 laptops out there by Dell and HP I think are a very good deal. You can make your own laptop using OCZ's DIY kit but your still stuck with lack of control over what graphics and such you can have.

How are they supposed to get paid if no profit is made then? People getting paid has everything to do with the higher price tag.

Not all pre-built gaming PCs are a rip off. In fact, some are actually really good deals.

whitebooks allow you to customize the type of processor, screen, hard drive, memory, CD drive and even graphics, basically most of the components. but theres not a whole lot of selection like there is with desktop hardware and you'll have to buy the outer shell of the laptop from manufacturers who sell whitebooks.

some desktops can be a real deal while others can be built by yourself to save you anywhere from a hundred to a few hundred bucks.

I looked into it once....a while back. After pricing out the white box laptop (base config) and all the parts I wanted I found that I hadn't saved anything. It might be different now. You'd have to do your own pricing. The other problem with white boxes is that you don't have a huge selection (unlike a desktop). Only certain parts will be selectable for the white box.
