topic says it all. Have done my research read up on these forums and know for a fact that plasma tv is the best way to go. Was already to pull the trigger on a 60"ST50 but than the wife talked to a friend about image burn in.See we have 3 small children and no matter how many times we tell them they will pause the tv or leave a game on for hours at a time.So if you had to buy a non plasma what model would you guys pick? Thanks for any info.

Uhh when do you listen to the wife? Never...

Also, just set the plasma to turn off after 30 mins of inactivity (still picture or no signal).

"Image retention isn't as bad as it used to be." I agree but with 3 children its going to be left on pause on movies/games/tv no matter how hard we try.

"Uhh when do you listen to the wife? Never...

Also, just set the plasma to turn off after 30 mins of inactivity (still picture or no signal)." Thanks for the idea didnt even think of that. I wonder though 30 mins on pause seems like it could cause some major IR problems?

Anyways wife is pretty much said no to plasma so what options do i have to try to get close to the performance of the ST50 in LeD or LCD?

I have a GT25 and a VT30 from the last few years and both of them have burn in from the action skill icons in Borderlands and Borderlands 2. They both have their ( worthless ) IR preventions turned on and were both broken in with a test image disc prior to using them.

And yes it is BURN IN and not IR. You can still see the eagle action icon from Borderlands 1 on the GT which hasnt been played since it was released and has had THOUSANDS of hours worth of material ran through it since then.

Neither screen was ever used on their torch mode/game mode settings and were always ran at or below THX calibration settings.

Doesn't really answer your question. Just wanted to throw this out there for all the people who will say "blah blah noob burn in doesn't exist anymore herpa derp".

Burn-in exists on LCDs and LED-LCD TVs as well. Not only are there auto shut-off features on today's TVs, but I believe the PS3 and 360 have an auto-dim feature if the same image is left on for too long. I know Panasonics have a pixel orbiter so the picture slightly shifts around (not noticable unless you're looking for it) to keep it moving. (I had turned mine off in the example below.)

We have an ST30. Never even seen the Windows start button get IR'ed or burned in on the TV when I leave it on overnight. When I played Darksiders 2, I paused it once and forgot to turn off the TV. Was there for about 5 hours and when I turned the TV off there was some IR. Just ran the built in filter and it was gone.

"And yes it is BURN IN and not IR." After having this happen Alterecho would you still buy a new ST50 plasma or would you stear clear of plasma all together now?

I would still buy plasma every day of the week over any other option.

Well it was on PC and I had all anti-IR/burn-in options turned off (looks slightly better with them off.) Was entirely my fault but I turned back on that option for Windows to cut the video after inactivity, so it's no longer an issue either way. :D

Consoles have auto shut-off features. If you're so worried about it, enable those features.

These Sony Bravia TVs are quite good, I've looked at one in a shop. Still quite significantly worse picture compared to the Panasonic plasmas that were on another shelf but... descent.

Image Burn in isn't a huge issue as it was for decade old Plasma's. You can still definitely do it though. That's old marketing and PR the wife is working on you, but you know safety and all that. Besides, LCD/LED still have image retention as well if you really are concerned. They have codes to lock your TV out from your kids, and sleep timers even. My Plasma dims for me, but again, I'm careful, although I could be more careful definitely.

If you are incredibly worried, you could always buy a cheapy second TV for your kids to game on. Three is a lot of kids, that's five people fighting for the TV counting you and your wife. It may be time to get those kids a family TV of their own, even if it's a cheapy older CRT at a pawn shop.

You live your whole life, you work hard, you should buy what you want. You have kids, get them their own cheap TV they can smash up in a different room.

If your wife is going to make the technology decisions in your life, I hope there is balance somewhere else. There's always happy hour, see you at the pub. :P
