It's region-locked!

Example: a UK copy can only be activated in the UK!

This only applies to retail copies, GMG has confirmed their keys are universal.

Frickin' terrible news, good job announcing so late. If you keep reading the linked thread you'll see how an Italian dude that pre-ordered a UK Collector's Edition is advised by the admins to cancel it. Say goodbye to bonuses, good prices... Pay attention to the copy in your local store - if it's imported, you're screwed.

It only applies to boxed copies. The ones on GMG for example are NOT region locked. Check here.

You must be new to Steam, your account doesn't remain through that proxy (which is obvious), if the publisher/developer wants, Valve can/will check if your copy is registered on the appropriate region, if not they can and will remove your game from the account, yes it happened before CoD MW 2 is an example, they don't care anymore but it happened in the first few months (there were also some reports on Black Ops and I remember two other games that worked like that, not related to Activision).

Better safe than sorry.

Just wait 'till this becomes a trend. I buy most games from the UK, the hell am I supposed to do when every Steamworks title will be region locked? Find another hobby?!

I never asked for this.

Why are these companies so determined to turn the PC into a closed system like it's a console? Actually, I know the answer to that - they're greedy.

Not only does steam have crap prices and lousy support for EU, they are also cutting us off from importing the game for cheap.

Stay classy Gabe.

I wouldn't be too concerned about this TBH. Region locking on PC is a joke. Hell, I just got down with playing the Tera Online Japanese open beta today which was not only region locked but IP locked as well. All I had to do was change my display language to Japanese (I also changed locale to be safe) and use a VPN to gain a Japanese IP address. Simple. You can do the same thing with DXHR I'm sure. Change display language to "English (United States)" or "English (United Kingdom)" depending on the version you bought, change locale as well, and if it wants an online activation then use a VPN or proxy that's located in the country the game wants to be activated in.

I'd rather not risk my account with a proxy. Valve's banhammer is incredibly random and hurts a lot.

This is exactly why I have avoided Green Man Gaming. Yes, their prices are incredible and very tempting, but it is not worth losing games on my accounts if someone decides to crack down on it.

Why would you ever need to play a game outside of your region?

What?

Because some games do not come out in certain regions?

Bleh, region locking and PC gaming don't belong in the same sentence. At least GMG codes aren't locked.

Hmm thanks for clearing things up a little bit. I'll wait another few days to see what the situation is, and if it is true I'll be cancelling my pre-order all together.

I'm guessing it's so they can market the price differently in different areas, to bring in the most revenue. Probably lower costs in Russia, Asia, and wherever there are big bootleg markets. The region locking is needed to prevent lost profits due to ease of reselling cdkeys through the internet.

WTF? What about South Asia, then? Only solution is to get it from GMG? Anyway, what on Earth are they gaining by region locking it?

Like someone said a few posts above.. Different prices for different regions. Which has already been happening.

Many European stores import games from the UK, because they're cheaper. CD key sellers buy retail games from cheaper regions and scan the keys. And in HR's case, the preorder bonuses are different across regions and I think the UK is the only one who gets the complete package. The CE and Augmented Editions aren't available everywhere.

A lot of Europeans import games from the UK because they're cheaper and come with good extras.
