I never played gothic 3 but if you didn't like that you probably won't like gothic 2...they are similar. And no, it can't be downloaded for "free." Two Worlds just came out, and then there's always morrowind and Oblivion.
I've only played gothic 2 and i thought it was an excellent game. Just be warned, you get killed quite a bit in the beginning since you are weak, so don't feel angry or annoyed since this is purposeful.
I've played Gothic 1,2 and 3 and I really enjoyed them all. Gothic 3 is a bit annoying at the start but later on its getting better. Almost like all games their sequels are better, so if you didnt like gothic 3 you wont like gothic 2 as well, maybe because you dont know the whole story too. Anyway it's worth playing. (sorry for my bad english :P)
Gothic 2 is a much better game than Gothic 3. The world of Gothic 2 is smaller, but much better designed and the game's pacing and progression was better thought out than Gothic 3's. Combat is much more involved in Gothic 2 as you really have to watch and react to your opponent's moves. Also, increasing in a certain weapons skill in Gothic 2 really felt like an achievement as it granted you access to new, more sophisticated manoeuvres which gave you more options when fighting. It also rewarded exploration as there were lots of goodies to be found in the depths of the deadliest dungeons or in remote, hard to reach spots.
Gothic 2 is a 100 times better than Gothic 3. Look for the Gold Edition that includes the Night of the Raven expansion pack. It sells for cheapat amazon.com or amazon.ca.
