And I'd really appreciate some comments/criticisms. The video card in my laptop just died in the middle of a huge project and I threw this build together in in a hurry. I'm trying not to break the bank, but I'd like to be able to run current releases. It's been a while since I put together a machine, so if I overlooked anything please let me know.

That PSU is overkill. You could downgrade to a 550-600watt and save a few bucks. You could put that money into a 5770 or even a 5830 now that its cheaper. Likewise, you could swap out the 965 for a 955 to save a bit. Unless noise is an issue or you plan on OCing immediately, you probably won't need an aftermarket cooler.

I might suggest going to the Samsung Spinpoint, more space and I believe it has been proven faster:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185

Also maybe a different case:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119215

You could also save a few bucks on the PSU because 650 would be plenty for a single GPU build. Use the extra cash for a better video card, GTX 460 maybe?

Go for a lower wattage PSU. The GTX 460 minimum requirement is merely 450 watts (you want a GTX 460, trust me). I'd go for this:

Get a Samsung Spinpoint F3 instead of that Caviar Black. I got one myself the other day and can honestly say it's the best HDD I've ever owned (even if it is only 500gb).

Thanks for the comments. Is there any particular reason why the case you recommended would be better than the one I originally found?

EDIT: Also, do I really need the CPU cooler? I thought it would be a good idea, but I tend to be overcautious sometimes.

For some reason I have it in my head that it's a cardinal sin to mix AMD processors and NVIDIA GPU's. Is there any rationale to that, or am I just an out-of-touch old-timer?

Just get a SLI compatible board if you are worried. 460 is hard is hard to beat for the price and AMD is the same. I say mix the two for ultimate afford ability.

The case, cooling and I like the 690 better then the Centurion 5.

I don't like to do it myself but right now I'm running a Phenom II X4 and a GTX 460 and it's great :P

I agree with everyone saying to go with a 460, the 4850's aren't really worth buying anymore to be honest. I know its gonna suck shelling out another 80 dollars or so, but if you go with the 460 you won't have to upgrade for much ping than you would with a 4850. And by that time it would be very hard to sell the 4850 for much at all making it a worthless investment.

Look into doing this to help trim a few bucks on some items and then pick up a GTX 460 (unless you want ATI cards for the future purpose of running Crossfire, than a 5830).

CPU: Phenom II x4 955 - will save you $16 over the 965.

PSU: Corsair 650W - will save you $20 over the 750W

HDD: Samsung 500GB - will save you $20 over the WD 640GB

Doing those couple of things will cut your cost by $56.....making that a $56 you can spend on a better GPU. If you can squeeze out a few more dollars you can pick up a GTX 460 or if you want to stick with ATI, get a HD 5830.

Do you plan to OC your rig?

If not you can omit the HSF and use the stock one saving you a few bones, also tone the PSU down as the others have said. You can get the Antec Earthwatts 650watt PSU for $80 and it has a $15 MIR bringing the price down to $65. Even that PSU is overkill but with the base price and MIR it's a nice deal.

That right there would give you an immediate savings of ~$60 and once the MIR goes through it would be ~$75. That money could go toward the GTX 460.

Don't worry about mixing an AMD proc with an nVidia GPU. It will still perform flawlessly.
