Yes I know....

I am going to college next year and I need mobility.

I personally want an asus g70, but my dad wants me to get a Dell 1730 because I can bring them to an on campus repairshop

The dell in question has 4 g ram, 2.5 ghz dual, dual 8700 - :( - gt, all for around 2k dollars.

Is this a really bad idea?

Honestly? Yes, I would just get a really cheap $500-600 laptop for word processing, and then just build something like a mATX gaming rig with what's left of that cash... much more bang for your buck

Yea I was considering getting a really **** light laptop and couple it with a hardcore cheap desktop, but wouldn't two computers get a little excessive and confusing? Plus it'd be nice if I could play games on the go

I would go with a netbook for class and mobility. The the desktop for games, also the upgrade paths on laptops are really limited.

Two computers confusing? I have 4 in my house. It's completely your choice, if you feel the price is worth it for the laptop and doing some pretty good gaming on, the go then that's your choice. However if you have the cheap laptop just for schooling, word processing, internet etc and a desktop in your dorm for gaming, it would be easier. My 2 cents, people are always going to have different opinions

Not bad for a laptop, semi-good GPU considering mobile GPU's are less powerful than the desktop counterpart. However $2099 is a hell of a lot for what you're getting.

Put it this way, the rig in my sig cost me $1500 CDN, and it'll crunch pretty much anything... However for a laptop, pretty powerful
