I had America's Army for a while. I thought it was decent, but too slow. I uninstalled it just yesterday after finding a new online FPS, still in beta, called Combat Arms. It is free to play and download and is much faster and more chaotic. You can get it from fileplanet, and it only took me about a half an hour to download.
It still has several features that are "comming soon", but I suggest starting now so that you have a chance to be a top player by the time the game is more complete.
I expected it to be hard, something you could do for training, and when I played it, the controls were terrible, clunky, and it killed it.Legendaryscmt
i usually get used to them.and there's training.you get used to them in training.then go out to play online.i played it a while back and it was very fun.
People often complain about having to wait for the next round but personally I always liked that part of the game, it adds tension when you only have that one life, I've never had the same adrenaline rush in any other online shooter as I did in AA being the last guy left on my team and being close to completing the objective. And if you don't like waiting, don't die so early. But yeah, if you're expecting something fast paced a la BF, forget about it.
And the graphics aren't that bad, in fact considering its age they're pretty nice after you crank up the AA from you videocard control panel.

bf was good.especially 2142.waiting for the round is a tad bit more realistic.but if you die early, might as well get somethin to eat lol.

the controls were the same in almost any fps

wsad :D
I thought the controls were actually decent.
When I first started playing I would die within the first minute of action, then have to wait like 8 minutes for the next round. It sucked, but it didnt stop me from playing. I got better and really started enjoying the game. But after playing the same levels over and over, I quit.
My fave level was the Bridge. :P
America's Army wasn't made to appeal to everyone. People who play arcadish shooters (CS, CoD, BF...ect) probably aren't going to like it very much. People who hate arcadish shooters and tend to stick with games like WWII Online, Operation Flashpoint, Armed Assault or R6 (not the new crap, the *real* R6) will probably enjoy America's Army.. It's definitely not a FPS for beginners and not for people who aren't patient.
Overall I would have gladly paid $50 for America's Army if I had to, it's retail quality. I'm just waiting for 3.0 to come out (hopefully before 2009) before I jump back into it.

LOL I downloaded the Americas Army XD cuz of you guys..... omfg :P
I'm playing always the map special forces extraction... I remember when i played it with my friends and we had good time.. good old times ;)
Americas Army is a nice realistic army game and the only reason people dont like it is because of a high learning curve that results from the realism. "clunky controls" more like 'i couldnt kill somone the first time i played so i got frusterated and stopped playing'. Only thing is the graphics are getting dating but AAO 3.0 is gonna change that.way2funny
Probably one of my favourite MP FPS games, but it isn't realistic at all. It is just slow and actually requires that people think a little before charing in.

I find it to be pretty realistic. I agree with everything else you said though. Its probably one of my fav fps games online. I love hopping on vent with my clan and actually plan stuff, the sense of teamwork is great.
