I just ordered me up a nice new pc and it's coming with Vista. I've been holding off getting Vista since launch for the basic reason of all the bugginess that usually somes with a new OS. Well the time has come and I'm getting it, so how does it fare with all the games that are currently out? Should I just buy a 2nd hard drive and figure out somehow to get Xp on it and dual boot for my older games or has Vista evolved enough to handle most games now?

Thanks a bunch. I have a ton of games and just want most of them to work. Also how do newer games compare in Vista to XP? Is there a performance hit when the game is only DX9 using vista?

Thanks again.

vista is a resource hog and driver support isn't what it is for xp so things will run slower on vista. if you have at least 2GB of ram you should be okay but, unless you like the GUI of vista, i really don't see much of a reason to use it- especially not until SP1 is released.

If Vista was a party, it'd be one of those "parties" where parents would invite over the local children when their kid got chicken pox.

Vista is garbage, other then the fact that DX10 improvements are minscule in just abou teveyr game except maybe Crysis, it has piss poor performance.. Microsoft is such a PoS hype engine, claiming that you would get 60% performance increase in games with Vista over Xp.. And they can't even get it to even match Xp's performance.

lol, don't believe thePC noobs regurgitating the same crap from almost a year ago. If you have new hardware to support it, vista is fine. I run every game at or above xp framerates, without any issues to speak of. You are also helping to futureproof yourself as the dx10 native games are bound to start coming out in a year or so (most current ones just have dx10 tacked on).

Regardless, vista looks better too, in buying a new pc you'd just be hating yourself in a year or so if you had stuck with xp... as cool as these guys think they are sticking with a dying OS. I'd also reccomend going with 64 bit in case you decide to upgrade to 4gb or more of ram... but as you've already ordered, it's probably too late for that.

edit: also, dual booting is pretty much un-neccisary anymore. Drivers are and have caught up to the os... even creative's slow driver team has pulled out some decent drivers. you'll be fine.

Excuse me but this sounds like it got dumped directly out of MS' Butt on the way to the sewer of unfullfilled potential.

Like one user said if you plan on using it for gaming stick to XP if you want a pretty desktop with a bunch of bloated Vista only (read Buy again) programs that hog resources like vista itself,go for it.

I'm no MS fanboi, I'd be on linux in a heartbeat if it were a gamer's OS. In fact, I hear MS plans to make it's next OS subscription based... which I dispise. I also dispise MS's live service. Dispite all of this though, I'm not going to say Vista is a bad OS... because it's not, it's not the second coming either though... but if you are buying a new system, it'd be foolish to stick with XP.

I agree on if its a new system as long as it has a DX 10 card, I would never upgarde any exsisting system to Vista unless you needed it for work or something.

Thats funny because just about every benchmark that has been provided regardless of the game shows a NET loss in performance with Vista over Xp.. There is absolutely no reason to get it inless your system is rediculouslly speced.. Who cares if he is fureproofing himself its garbage right now and there is no reason to get it.. You can always buy it latter on you know? If youra student at a university you can get OS's such as Vista for dirt cheap.

Wow, I can't believe the number of Vista haters out there.

Vista is a memory hog that much is very true. I've had problems with some newer games wanting to use over 1.5 GB of ram to run and that causing the games to crash. If you plan on using Vista to game with make sure you are using at least 3 GB of ram, 4 if you are using the 64bit version of Vista. Vista is a great operating system if you have the system to run it. Vista tends to run games a couple of frames slower. M$ have been making steady improvements to game performance and the first service pack is due out in January.

No most people are not haters.. We are just really discouraged with the fact that MS claimed a 60% boost in game performance with Vista, instead you get a ssytem thats a hog, with less performance then even xp.. And DX10 has yet to show its worth the performance hit.. My opinion may change at that service pack, but as it stands its not worth getting.. Specially the fact that you simply can not play certain games on Vista due to compatability issues.

That just says that they are handling it just like they did 98SE when XP first came out. Vista is a great product and just like XP when it was first released it is a resource hog.

You may was well stick with XP,I bought Vista about 5-6 months ago and am now back on XP,I cant even play crysis on medium settings using vista and DX10.But with windows XP and DX9 I can play just fine on all high settings with no lag a 1280z1024.And can play Very high with the XP mod and get around 15-25FPS.

You lose about 5% - 10% performance in games.

Its a neglibable drop in performance for all the features you get. I've generally found it to have more compatibility with my games than XP.

Actually after i upgraded i noticed my frame rates were identical and i have only had vista for about 2 -3 weeks now and im loving it. I like eye candy:) and i am only using 1.5 gb of ram. Overall though none of my game NONE performed at a noticeable lower frame rate meaning if i did loose a bit it was between 1-5 at most and beleive me im constantly checking my frame rates (habbit).

"Currently,"

1. for those who have mid-range or older machines, XP x86 is still the best gaming OS: eats less system resources and can play any xp/dx9 native game smoothly.

2. for those who have high-end rigs with more than 4 GB ram, Vista x64 is the best gaming OS. actually, had MS put more effort in improving xp pro 64, Vista x64 would only be "best" for those who have dx10 cards; dx9 card owners can still go for xp x64. However, now as it stands, xp x64 has more problem running games than Vista x64.

I use Vista and it's great for me... the only game I have had a problem with is guess witch one...

Yep Crysis...

Crysis works like $#%# with SLI but works fine with one card enabled.

Yea if there is any perfomance loss from xp to Vista I cant tell because Im usually around 60-100 FPS depending on the game.

I'm playin the witcher right now on Vista-32 bit and it runs buttery smooth.

with all the udates and hotfixes Vista works good enough now that I wont be installing xp on my gaming machine any time soon...

I'm sure patches and updates will bring it up to par in near future.

Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 CPU
WD Raptor HDD
OCZ 700 watts peak PSU
2x 8800 GT 512 MB in SLI
4 GB Crucial ballistics RAM
ASUS P5N32 E SLI MB w/beta bios
Audigy 2 soundblaster w/optical to reciever
24" Dell widescreen at 1920 x 1600
Running on Vista 32-bit

Come out and play!

I have had few problems with Vista. Games run like a champ on it. And believe me DX10 is awesome. My older games ran fine. Just make sure you get a real good graphics card and your on easy street. Crysis runs like a dream and looks like one too.

Games do run slightly slower on vista, its a well known fact. However, the difference is small to invisible (2-4 fps usuaully), and supposedly its mostly because of still immature graphics drivers. The OS itself is very solid, with very few bad bugs. (the only one I can name is the one where large file transfers over network or between different harddrives can sometimes hang or slow way down). Driver support is great for a new windows OS. As long as you arent trying to run some 1994 printer or such, you'll be fine.

vista is cool with me. been using it for about 5 months, all i do is game and surf. it works well. but i got great hardware, so... it really depends on your hardware. 2GB will play any game (for the next year?)
