Motherboard; Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GA-MA790X-UD4P

CPU; AMD Phenom II X4 920

The HD 6870 is much cheaper than the 6950 in terms of price (as upward of ~60 (USD) dollars cheaper)

But they only have 1.024GB of VRAM and I hear that cannot function for the ubersampling modes in the Witcher 2 and Ultra BF3 and DX11 (Tessy) Crysis 2

Is the 6950 worth the extra cashola or wait for the 7000 series? (which might not even function on my mobo)

Ubersampling is useless and even if you wanted to you need a $400 GPU to use it.

6870 can max BF3 with 40-45 FPS @1080p (with no AA) with DX11.

6870 murders Crysis, maxed will hit 45 fps.

(which might not even function on my mobo)

When I said "might not even function on my mobo" I was talking about the 7000 series as I heard they are using RAMDAC ram solutions (Also. PCI-E 3.0?) and I'm not sure if thats compatible with AM2+/(Limited AM3) mobos.

Any way, I'm more thinking about the future as I cannot keep updating my GPU as I am heading off to college (maybe?) and I need a stable GPU solution for the years to come.

VRAM is now becomg an increasing importance in games as buffers are now getting overflowed with huge textures, I need my GPU to last me a while...

All you need for a graphics card to be compatible with your motherboard is a PCI-e 16x slot, it doesn't even have to be 2.0 or 3.0 they are all backwards compatible.

And if you need your graphics card to last "a while" (2 years?) I would definently wait until december to see what things are looking like, next gen is right around the corner, which is the only time you should wait.

Even if you have the money for it, if you don't think its worth it then don't go for it. I've been gaming on my buddy's sweet gaming PC before I built my recent one and I had it all planned out to have a nice quad core and GTX 570.

Then I took some advice from a buddy to heart on saving cash so I don't starve or miss out on great games, and just got a 460 and added it to my (admittedly, otherwise great) rig. It runs most games on high or maxed at a resolution I'm comfortable with.

If you absolutely think you want that extra performance, go for it. But if you get the 6870, you'll have a bit more cash for games.

Ironically, the friend that told me to save my cash for games decided to buy a $500 GTX 580 despite telling me not to spend more then I needed. I guess the moral of the story is that its your money, do whatever you want with it.

yep i also had the 460 gtx...a great card it was and id be happy with even now if i had decided to stick with it. I decided to get the 6950 2gb and admittedly games don't look much better. Sure i can push settings higher but overall the game looks the same whether you put it on high or ultra. I guess the reason i went with the 6950 was because i had money to burn and wanted to pimp out my pc.

I have an MSI R6870 HAWK (Twin Frozr III). I got it for £150 (not $ I'm afraid). It runs soooo cool compared to most 6870's. I ramped up the overclock with MSI Afterburner Utility and I haven't played a game I can't yet Max @ 1080p with no slowdown.. Blows through Crysis etc. Bearing in Mind I have not played BF3 yet, but for the money I paid it is a monster. Now though the HAWK 6870 has been about £200 in UK for some reason.

whats better a 570 or a 6950 2g, they are about the same price? i have been leaning towards the 6950 2gb for the eyefinity.

I use two 6870s (1GB VRAM) and can play BF3 on ultra and TW2 with ubersampling on without suffering too much on the performance. I still had ubersampling off though because I'm so damn picky about my frame rates, but it was just a minor slowdown with it turned on. I can't remember my settings in BF3 atm but I think everything's maxed apart from shadows on high. I know you talked about getting one card but this is just a response to the VRAM thing. I play at 1920x1080.
