excellent choices for beginners ( and veterans for what it matters ) Civilization V is the perfect game for someone who never played a Civ game before ( you will find yourself playing 15-16hours matches and you wont even notice how time passes )

Honestly, you can pretty much just get Starcraft 2 and call it a day :P The game is meaty, straight forward, and competitive. Hell, you could probably spend months getting lost in the game's multiplayer (classic games or custom games are both equally a blast). Consider it a neoclassical RTS. I would ignore Age of Empires 3 and Stronghold 3, and instead get Rise of Nations. Shogun 2 and Civilization V are excellent games, but are TBS oriented and don't embody the spirit of the RTS genre.

It's enough. Games like that can keep you occupied for hundreds of hours each if you get in to them. However Don't waste money on Stronghold 3, it's an unfinished mess. Get the original Stronghold, much better choice. And get Civilization IV instead of V, also a better game.

FYI, RTS = Real-Time-Strategy (ala starcraft)
TBS = Turn-Based-Strategy (ala civlization)
Total War has both

RTS's come in two basic flavours, the small-scale tactical, whose best are (in my opinion):
Company of Heroes
Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth 1&2

and the large-scale war-fest (which I generally prefer):
Empire Earth 1&2
Age of Empires 2&3
Sins of A Solar Empire
Empires: Dawn Of The Modern World
Rise Of Nations

and other RTS's that lots of people like, but I don't, but may be for you:
Starcraft 2
Warcraft 3

TBS's all follow the same 4X system (which if I remember right is explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate ) and the best are undoubtaly:
Civilzation V
Galatic Civilizations 2

and Total War has both, in my opinon the best from that series are Shogun 2 and Rome...

Supreme Commander and Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance are both worth getting. They're large-scale RTSs with beefy maps to fight wars across.

(Avoid Supreme Commander 2, which was dreadful)

Out of those only starcraft and aoe are RTS games. Try Warcraft 3. That and Homeworld 1+2 are the best RTS games ever made IMO.

Absolutely fantastic. Except for Stronghold 3, I heard nothing but negative stuff about that game.

Check out Age of Empires Online if you like age of empires 3.

Check out previous Total War games if you like Shogun 2

Wargame: European Escalation is an RTS game that came out recently.

Westwood - Dune 2 - Dune 2000 - Red Alert 1, 2 , 3 , Tiberian Universe all of Tiberian games. aka Command & Conquer serials. Dune 2 is considered as father of RTS genre. Try any RTS from Westwood you wont regret. EA and Westwood isnt same. Westwood once company of talent and uniqe games now just a garbage of Big Bad Evil Troll called EA!

In other words, get Command & Conquer: The First Decade. Also, the EA hate is getting old. C&C 3 was as much C&C as any Westwood C&C game. I refuse to count C&C 4 as a C&C game.

Hey OP. I have a few questions for you.

Do you like giant robots and lasers?

Do you like the idea of incredibly huge armies of giant robots marching across massive maps while fighter jets and bombers scream overhead?

Does the word "strategy" mean more to you than memorizing a build order and clicking really fast?

Do you like good graphics and incredible unit scale coupled with strategic zoom capabilities?

If you answered YES to all of these, then boy do I have the game for you!

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. Get it RIGHT NOW!

If you have friends who have it too, you can learn the game by teaming up against ai opponents!

Pick yourself up Company of Heroes, that's a must. If you're even more curious in other RTS games outside of the usual template I highly recommend Men of War, Sins of a Solar Empire Trinity (the new expansion is due soon), World in Conflict + expansion, Supreme Commander, Anno 1404, Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising + Retribution and Perimeter. If you want a modern masterpiece that stretches the genre confines massively - Homeworld (and Homeworld 2 is quite good). Other great classics are quite large in quantity too.

Civ V is crack, get it

C&C 3 didn't like at all

Rise of Nation is excellent but it's old and graphics look bad, I couldn't play it.

SC2 haven't played but people swear by it.

I also vouch for Rise of Nations, Company of Heroes. Dawn of War is also brilliant, especially the original one's not to keen on Dawn of War II, but it's an okay game in it's own. Command and Conquer too, great games, but not so much Tiberium Twilight.

Funny as a big rts fan I have yet to play Sins of Solar Empire, Homeworld, or Supreme Commander.

I did play games like Warhammer though and they were boring.

I myself dislike non basebuilding RTS. World of Conflict is one of the only exceptions.

Warcraft 2 is another great RTS. Way better than Warcraft 3.
