Any why are 1/2 of the reviews in Amazon 1 stars? Seriously, I went there to see the price of the product, and glanced over the reviews.........and saw a bunch of DRM stuff.

It uses Securom. Which means you can only install it a few times (3 I think?). After that, you have to call to get licensed for another install. And I hear the process takes forever.

I seriously doubt that you'll want to install Spore 3 times on your computer though.

You never have them moments where you find an old game stashed somewhere, install it and damn it's as fun as it was ten years ago? DRM kind of kills that.

Here's the basic low-down on the whole Spore/Mass Effect DRM thing:

  • Once you install the game, SecuROM calls in to authenticate the product (to ensure that the game is a legit copy)
  • You only get 3 authentications
  • Installing on the same computer will NOT use an authentication
  • Installing on a different computer WILL use an authentication
  • Installing on the same computer but with a "significant hardware change" WILL use an authentication
  • EA has not specified what constitutes a "significant hardware change"
  • Users (gamers) have reported conflicting results of hardware changes that use up an activation
  • Once you reach the 3 authentication limit, you have to contact EA customer support (they prefer a non-internationally toll-free phone number) and navigate their support lines until you talk to a living, breathing person to allow you ONE MORE authentication
  • You will have to do this for every authentication after the third authentication

Bear in mind, that even though the whole 3 authentication limit is restrictive for those who have multiple computers (desktop and laptop) or who upgrade their computer(s) frequently, there are a few benefits. Actually, the only real benefit is that you don't need the disk in the drive. Oh, and that EA removed the whole phone-home 'feature' that they were going to use at first in conjunction with what's currently there.

It's pirates that hate DRM because it prevents them from pirating it easily. Anyone that disagrees with me is one of them.... Look for it.

Keep believing that  pirates don't give a damn, they just pirate it that's all, no EA support for new installs, no nothing.

Yah, so the end user getting screwed over and being treated like crap while the guy who cracks it and downloads it doesn't...um...how does that hurt pirates and help me , the guy who buys all of his games legaly?

What I want to know is what happens when a game is old and isn't supported anymore? Or the company that made it went out of business? You never get to play it again because you can't authenticate it? That would suck.

Pirates are laughing at the paying customers because they have a better version of the game than the people who paid for it.
