I bought RAGE for pretty darn cheap recently, and have been enjoying it quite a bit. I know this game is notoriously glitchy, but I'm wondering if there's a fix for the one that's getting me down. Whenever I enter a new area that the game has to stop and load, or when restoring a quicksave, I get MASSIVE slowdown and texture loading for up to 40 seconds. It's literally unplayable until the textures fill in and turn from blurry to crisp, then it runs like butter until I have to load again. This is running on a Steam-installed retail copy of the game with all patches. I've tried it with GPU transcode turned on and off, to no effect. My PC specs are-

AMD Phenom II X4 @ 3.7ghz

8GB DDR3 1333 RAM

Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti SOC 1GB

approx 470GB of free Hard drive space, recently defragged

Any ideas on how to eliminate this? It wouldn't bother me if it lasted 2 or 3 seconds.. but this is outrageous. Thanks for reading!

I tried the 1GB config file and it doesn't seem to have worked. I'll try the others too.. but right now it's looking grim.

Try google searching around for some more fixes. That was one of the first ones I saw and seemed to have worked for some people in that thread

Update- It seems that the only thing I really had to do was to change the "texture cache" to "low." Everything else is cranked up to max, and it's running beautifully after loading now. Thanks for your assistance.

You must have an Nvidia card.

AMD still has terrible support for OpenGL.

Nope. Got an AMD. Same with the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games. I've never encountered a single glitch in any of them.

You must be playing the magic versions of those games then, that came infused with spells to ward away the bugs and exploits.

RAGE is surprisingly polished, just not optimized well.

I had the very same problem when my computer had Nvidia graphics cards. I bought the game and couldn't play it at all. Tried a few fixes here and there, but still wouldn't work.

The issue is now gone now that I'm using AMD cards. Strange indeed. Now I can run the game butter-slick with 16k (unless I know, but have 3GBs of vRAM, so why not?) textures in Eyefinity-3. :)

Mmmh, 3 GB of vRAM.

I also had minimal problems with RAGE and my setup is a bit weaker than TC's. There was definitely texture popping, but it worked it out fairly quickly. The only notable issue I really had was that a few levels had a heavy color tone. The first mutant level was very gree, almost like a Matrix filter was added.... like the shadows were green (instead of black) and another level was very blue. This only effected the darker areas, so most of the levels looked fine, but it was somewhat bothersome.

I just want to reiterate to everyone that the problem is fixed. The fix was very simple. All I had to do was to change the texture cache setting from large to small. I guess that's because I'm using a 1GB card? It doesn't seem to affect the way the game looks at all, and it runs smooth as butter.
