My dad's computer is pretty ancient and he bought my whole family new computers before looking for something for himself. Now he wants a apple because he hears they're faster and don't have viruses. I want to know will the mac be intuitive enough for him to abandon microsoft office/xp and learn all of mac's new bells and whistles?

The reason I ask is the mac costs about twice as much as the dell and it's a big investment. Should he stick with what he knows or is it worth the learning curve that could lead him to a better experience on mac?

Also, will microsoft office work on his mac? I wouldn't have thought it would but someone told me it does.

"they're faster and don't have viruses"

Tell him that that's total BS.

I'd get the Dell. Much cheaper, and would do office work just as nicely as the Mac would.

*they're faster and don't have viruses*

The reason Macs don't get virus problems is because virus makers don't even want to bother to make a virus for such a small population. They aren't virus free or faster but virus makers just don't care to put thier viruses on apple's overpriced, overhyped POS computers.

People are going to be extremely biased here. As a mac owner (till my roommate accidently spilled water on it), they are very good machines and think they make way better choices for family/home computers. They are very easy to use, and I never lost a single document. I must say that in the 2 years of using my mac, it only had one crash. I can't count how many times I have had to work on my gaming PC...

Overall, macs: Great for general use

PC: Gaming, business

Part of the reason, yes. Not the whole reason. The way the Apple OS is designed is much more secure than Windows, and as such it is much harder to get a proper virus. Either way, the fact remains that Apple machines rarely (if ever) pick up viruses.

I regretted buying my parents a PC, they need help for everything, i would have told them to pony up and just get a Mac to see if they really are noob friendly :? ^Exactly why i hope they become more popular so they will be exploited with viruses

Prove your first sentence please. Just to help you out:

20" iMac with 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of DDR2 667 RAM, Radeon HD2600Pro 256MB graphics card, 320GB hard drive, keyboard, mouse, full suite of business applications equivalent to Office (iWork), and a full, no-questions-asked 3-year warranty from helpful customer service representatives. This setup costs $1900 from Apple, I'd like to see an equivalent machine for $900. And that's cutting you a lot of slack since there's no computer you'll buy in the world that can boot to OSX.

People are going to get stuck finding a better computer for "half the price" too. Or are you up to the challenge? Nah, thought not.

macs ARE supreame computers, though they are a little more exspencive, but they proven to perform better than windos, wonder why all companys mostly use them:)

they great for high programms like CAD ect or other demanding softwares, they dont tend to get viruses either due to the hardlines codes which make hacking them extreamly hard thus very secure computers to use.

most big companys tend to use them since they very good networking computers i have found and keeps all formats the same and easy to use/switch between.

windos good for gaming basicaly:) mac better pc.

i got windos by the way lol, though i work on macs.

Neither. They're both gimped and overpriced.

If you truly can't be bothered to spend the time to build a computer yourself, after you're done flogging yourself for being lazy, then at least make sure he's getting a PC from a decent custom builder. Does not matter if gaming is intended or not.

Where's your office productivity suite? Got links to prove how long all those warranties are good for? And I seriously hope you're not going to pit that monitor against the iMac screen, that's like putting a stock Honda CRX up against a tuned Toyota Supra. The iMac screen has true 8-bit color (Not sure if it's a VA or IPS type screen, but it's definitely NOT TN like that Acer.
