Sorry in advance for the lame Cataclysm question. Honestly, I never thought I'd go back and have not read much about the game. I'm now thinking about it. Grrrr. I know 2 new classes, blah blah blah - but, have they improved the graphics?

Slightly but if for some reason you quit because of the graphics then there is no reason to come back for the graphic improvements.

yeah to buy a game for the eyecandy is seriously the most pigheaded reason to be gaming :P

anyway the visual improvements are almost insignificant.

the requirements have moved from like an hd 2900xt or an hd 3830 (yes this card exists) its inconsequential

Nah, not the reason I quit, although I am a graphics snob. Monotonous as it was, it was still fun in it's day. (I love how everyone hates it now, yet at one point they all loved it) Anyway, if the graphics improved just slightly - I know what I may be getting into. I'd love an MMO, with the stability and gameplay ofWow, but with the Age of Conan graphics. I'd still be playing.

The forests are denser, theres alot more grass/flowers on the floor. Higher resolution environment textures for many areas. The water now doesnt look like patterned poop and ripples with movements properly. "sun shafts" were added.

Lots of little things, but hardly anywhere near Crysis levels. I wouldnt even sya its a huge jump from WotlK. Play it for the new updated content, not for the graphics.

I think the water improvements and the different textures added in the last couple patches are the best we're gonna get for Cataclysm in terms of graphics. If Blizzard keeps up the wonderful art style and the impressive environments, then I can't really think of a reason why they would really need to in my opinion, as most of the enviroments in World of Warcraft are downright amazing to look at. I'll take a fantastic art style with neat environments anyday over another Call of Duty clone that may have great graphics but a dull brown/grey world.

There's a bit of a difference there bud.... World of Warcraft is set in a fantasy settings, while CoD is in a war zone...so the world is going to be a bit more grey... The WoW engine is getting really outdated.... some textures are just too blocky, the art style is great though.... One thing that really bothers me is no animations on trees and grass, but also RECYCLED ROOMS....

I unerstand that. The thing is, there is too much games out today like Call of Duty and not enough games today like World of Warcraft. Who cares about the engine if the environments are still impressive to look at?

You cannot deny that to this day the art style is still more than good enough.

There's also a Northrend video by the same guy, just look on his Youtube page and you should find it there.

Oh I agree....they are doing what they can with a limited engine, I'm just saying it's getting outdated fast. Most characters look the same sometimes.... Some areas of WoW you look at and go WOW !!! others look really bad....

That requires processing power! Struth! People would have your neck if their ancient GPU couldn't run WoW.

it isnt the textures that are the problem... its the poly counts. the characters look like they were made with legos

The WoW engine isn't exactly dated. It's being updated and having improvements added just like Valve adds improvements and features to their Source engine. They even are experimenting with DX11 effects for their new water engine which is amazing imo. It looks a bit odd in some places but in most its stunning. Crysis level? Nah, but damn is it pretty to look at. Gotta remember its an open-world game with many others playing. They could make it look amazing and add more of a real-life feel to it, but higher graphic fidelity + tons of crap happening on screen + the natural lag from the way the network works would create a pretty bad experience. It's already cool how scalable their engine is. Old computers can run it and they keep adding features for newer hardware. Its not that they can't add all these things into the game really. Thats just Warcraft's art style. Starcraft on the other hand is pretty damn good imo, especially the out-of-combat parts. I never expected those kinds of visuals outside of Blizzard's CGI (Which I think is the best of the industry.)

The beta doesn't look much different, so graphics will be pretty much the same with an odd texture added here and there.

The Graphics are never going to be cutting edge the game is just too old. My biggest issue with the visuals in WOW was how bland the old world was. The art design in TBC and especially WOTLK was considerably better than a lot of Kalmidor for instance. With CATA coming out and causing the old world to be essentially destroyed I'm sure the new environments will be considerably more detailed.

Isn't expecting every room to be unique a bit unrealistic in an MMO as large as WoW?
