I was looking at impulse driven games and they price their games unlike other DD services to a correct dollar euro ratio ( street fighter 4 for instance cost 38 euros instead of $50 ). Besides been honest to gamers ouside US they also dont require an external program like steam to play their games ( although i still like steam due to their fantastic weekend deals and the largert game selection they have) . You get a serial and you can redownload as many times the game you bought and activate it through the serial ( you can also burn it to a dvd)

I think impulse is the first major DD service that got thinks completely correct

it is a fantastic service. for some games they also have the option of sending out a box. i can buy sins through impulse for example and for a few bob extra, they will send out a box with the manual (good manual in sins) and CD. you still get access to the download version also though so you dont have to wait for the box to arrive. i love that. sadly it doesent get all the big games that steam does....but i reckon theres still loads of interesting (if not well covered by the media) games. one that i intend to pick up is evochron legends....looks like a great space sim and i was impressed by the demo. but yeah..great service in my experience. its my first port of call when im getting a game through DD.

Yes, I know, it's x1000 better than Steam, it's only lacking in library but you have to give it time. And hopefully PC gamers stop clinging into their Valve fanboyism.

Hm.. sounds interesting, but I've never tried it. I actually like that most of my games are tied into the Steam client, though.

I never understand why people hate having Steam run in the background. Games don't take a performance hit or anything, maybe it does on computers with specs lower than a microwave or possibly it's just an OCD thing with apps.

While I don't care for boxes, never read, and definitely never open manuals in Adobe pdf form with DD games, it sounds nice to have the option to pay extra to get a boxed copy shipped.

The service's library is pretty limited, the only game on there I ever considered buying was Braid. I usually go to Direct2drive if not Steam for my DD purchases.

The biggest thing I was unaware of prior to reading this post was the dollar to euro ratio with Impulse. I live in the states, but I hear that Steam really rips off Europeans in game prices vs North America.

Actually there are quite a few games on impulse. Some big ubisoft games like assasins creed and far cry 2. There is also stalker games, stardock plublished titles like sins, galactic civ's,dawn of discovery, kings bounty . They have a good selection but not like steam. Steam is good and everything but i still prefer the way impulse work . Just buy the serial number and download the game as many times as you want and no need for an external program to run ( impulsle also has a program like steam but it doesnt needed to be opened to play games. You can open it though to easilly patch your games and buy games from it )

Steam tends to be cheaper for UK residents, and so is better for us. It also has better weekly sales. I personally find it to be substantially better than Impulse.

Yes it is better in many ways, I like the client itself more also. Steam of course has the bigger library as well as more features. Both are good and competition is never bad, so I hope Impulse gains a bit more foothold among PC gamers in the future.

I prefer gamersgate over steam. Atleast they reward you for buying games via the blue coin system. I used impulse 1 time and it's a good system, nothing special

Impulse is still fairly new, and has been growing pretty well. Just give it time.

It is the best for new games, GoG still trumps anything because NO drm and very cheap games that I know will work.

Impulse is not bad at all. But Steam just has the better games. Most of my DDs are from Steam, but I always check if the game is on Impulse: I'm European, and therefore variable exchange rates are a blessing, although that doesn't mean the games will always be cheaper on Impulse than on Steam. Not all games on Steam are sold on a 1$=1e basis.

Impulse is pretty cool but they are new and their games library isn't that big...yet. So they usually lose out on the weekend deals. But I hope it'll grow because, you know, its good to ahve choices and alternatives and its good to give the big 'uns a run for the money. Consumers win when theres a VERY healthy and active competition :)

I agree, Impulse is a good service.:)

In addition to what has been mentioned, Stardock has Impulse check for game patches & updates, and you can boot your games without Impulse if you so desire.

Steam i really only good for its weekend and christmas and random deals. I mean i got Farcry, Beyond: Good & Evil, Dark Messiah, and IL-2 Sturmivok for i thin it was all 4.99. But to be honest i would never buy a full priced game through any digital service and steam just seems to have the deals so it is the place i go.

also i'm not from Europe so the prices are horrible (which i still don't understand why they do that... oh yeah... greed).

I am slightly annoyed that developers are turning away from the traditional "Here's the patch on Gamershell.com (or even Gamespot.com, for example), download it if you want. You don't have to. But it's there and free. You don't have to sign up to anything, just download it." They all seem to be heading for the Steam way; "Here's the patch. You need to download a program that might/might not be a virus that destroys your computer. You need to sign up. Your computer will download the patch automatically. You have no choice in the matter."

Anyways, I have a question about Impulse, specifically Sins of a Solar Empire. I have just downloaded Impulse but have not signed up to it as I wish to know a few things first. I want to update my game to a more recent version. However, I heard that when you do that you can no longer install that copy of the game onto a different computer and update that as well.

Is this true? It's a shame if it is because my dad, my brother and I like to play games over a LAN network together. Anyone know?

I liked Impulse, but it doesn't have the same great deals that steam does, which is mostly what I purchase from them now. I don't think I've bought a full price game from steam since... Left 4 Dead is actually the only full priced game I've purchased on steam out of 35+ games.

Impulse (Stardock) also has a better attitude towards PC users in general: They don't care for excessive DRM, they lean more towards allowing the purchaser to reinstall as needed (like GamersGate). Impulse is also great at keeping up with patches.

Which one has the lower price varies. At any rate, the publishers ultimately decide the prices on all of the digital distribution services that I am aware of. They decide the price and then the service owner gets some cut of it. The service owners probably try to influence the publishers from time to time, but ultimately pricing is the publisher's decision. The terms of those deals probably vary according to individual arrangements, particularly with regards to temporary sales and bundles. As a service, I like Impulse better. Their selection, however, is somewhat lacking, and I have on occasion found older games cheaper on Steam, sometimes FAR cheaper, though some of those prices have since been matched on Impulse.

I like that they don't screw you over and prevent you from playing your games just because your internet connection is down or something, for one thing. Yes, I know that Steam has an offline mode, but you have to activate it while you are still online. That's pretty damn stupid. It's just yet another example of DRM punishing legitimate users while the large-scale pirates just use workarounds anyway.
