The Civ series of games are actually relatively quite simple and accessable. If you want to progress to something with more depth and complexity, I suggest any of the following:

Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun

War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition

AGEOD's American Civil War: The Blue and the Grey,

Napoleon's Campaigns,

Birth of America II,

Rise of Prussia.

Forge of Freedom

Crown of Glory: Emperor's Edition

Gary Grigsby's War Between the States

Space Empires IV Deluxe

Look at the Total War series. They combine Great TBS with real time battles. You can even skip the battles using the auto-resolve function.

I like all of them but they are definitely niche games. I won't make a specific recommnedation as I have no idea what aspects of a game are the ones that are compelling to you and provide you with enjoyment. Some have demos, give those a try and see what you think.

Another vote for Rise of Nations

Also: Galactic Civilizations II

If you want something really different: Armageddon Empires
