Thanks for the info everyone. So do games like Call of Duty 4, Forza 2, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Gran Turismo 4, Assassin's Creed, take any performance hit when set to 480p or 720p?onch
Well most console games have the framerate capped and are designed to run smoothly at 720p, so I don't think you would notice the difference. If you have 720p, there is no reason not to use it.

Oh i see. How about antialiasing? does anyone know what level of antialiasing consoles use for most games? and does it change depending on what resolution is chosen?onch
I believe the level of AA is entirely up to the developer, but judging by how they look most of them are around 2-4x AA.
Not quite - 720p isn't a standard 4:3 resolution like on a computer. 720p is actually 1280x720, a 16:10 ratio. The closest common computer equivalent to 720p is 1280x800, although we're seeing more monitors capable of 16:10 ratios instead of 16:9 like most widescreen monitors use. It's uncommon to find even a 17" widescreen monitor that has a native resolution lower than 1440x900 though, meaning even a small computer monitor outputs at a higher resolution than 720p.RayvinAzn
I think you mixed up your ratios, but yeah 1280x800 is comparable to 720P. Pretty low for any monitor these days.
Mixed them up how? Older common resolutions like 1024x768 and 800x600 are at a 4:3 ratio, TV resolutions like 854x480 and 1280x720 are 16:9, while common widescreen monitor resolutions like 1440x900, 1680x1050, and 1280x800 are all at a 16:10 ratio.RayvinAznMixed up as in your initial post stated 1280x720 was 16:10, and the closest thing to 720p a computer had was 1280x800. This is incorrect. 720p is 1280x720, and that's a 16:9 ratio (which is what HDTVs are). You seem to have corrected that part of your error in this last post though. Also, just because a game is 1080p does not mean the console is rendering 1920x1080. In many cases it's rendering something less and upconverting it.
