Ultima Online was probably as deep as you can get for an MMO. You could do whatever you wanted, skills, combat, etc. In it's prime it had a full economy, full world pvp. Hell people could make a house and start making houses. But EA came and ruined all that. You could still find some... special shards/servers.
I heard EVE online is also deep, Mortal Online seems ok.
Try Everquest I think they have a free trial, there will never be another MMO like it because todays MMOs are all noobed up wow clones and casualised for the mass market. I heard they changed a lot in Everquest and tried casualising it a bit more wich is a shame really, but its worth a try if you can try it for free.
I second EVE Online -- that game has deep written all over it. Complex, varied, and very rewarding if you put time into it. However, it is INSANELY complicated.
I mean whatever you do stay away from games like RuneScape, Maplestory (great game, I play it, but it is super casual), WoW, etc if you want something with lots of depth.
Eve online is buggy right now, I'd rather have a rectal exam than play or suggest this game. It does have a learning curve, but once you have passed it like I have, you learn the game is a sandbox where you can either be the bully or be the **** To add upon the simplified generalization, you join a corporation (WoW guild equivalent for YMCA fans), and you either Mine, Trade, do Missions (quests), or pvp which is bugged to hell with big fleets currently. You can solo of course or play with a friend, but the more the merrier in this game.
There is more loss than most MMO's with Eve, which I respect. Take your lame WoW character, he dies, well in my best terms, he loses all of his gear. That means you Vanilla WoW raid fans would gut yourselves most likely with your clingly digital gear if you died. To add to my enjoyment I will add this scenario, if Blizzard was to "incorporate" Eves loss system on their players I am guessing their 14 million subscribers would be down to 100k after a month.
If you want an indepth Sci-Fi sandbox MMO with free quality expansions (for the most part haha), then check out Eve I guess, it's much better than WoW anyway. CCP, the makers of Eve are releasing a game called Dust 314 or some bs, a FPS on the CONSOLE only. WTF, why choose to release an FPS on the console only. CCP are also the ones who are in charge of The World of Darkness MMO from White Wolf. I'm hoping they don't mess it up like their last 2 expansions from EVE.
Its also insanley boring as an MMORPG. Depends on what you are looking for. If you want to raid like you do in WoW, forget it. If you want to do lots of exploring and blowing up enemy ships, probably forget it. If you want to deal with a fluctuating economy with various markets, control corporations, form alliances, make a name for yourself, feel like a pilot in a vast galaxy full of pirates and enemy pilots... then give EVE a shot.[QUOTE="CaptainAhab13"]

Everquest has by far the most content and depth of any MMO out there as far as I know. It's pretty old so the graphics are very basic for the most part, but it's still great fun if you can get past the early (mostly sparsely populated) areas.
Raiding in EverQuest makes raiding in present-day WoW look like a joke.Everquest has by far the most content and depth of any MMO out there as far as I know.
