I just got Mass Effect 2 but the DVD drive on my computer is broken and I really don't want to replace it. I install most games by copying the files on the disc to my laptop and moving them to my desktop via external hard drive. I then just run setup and it works fine. The drive will read the DVD so I can play the game but it won't read the entire disc so I can't install using the drive. How do I install Mass Effect 2 using the raw files from both discs?

My advice is to buy an external dvd drive/burner. They are cheap and well worth it if your dvd drive is bust.

I bought the retail DVD for mass effect and installed it without ever putting a disc into my computer. Here is what you do. Go over to EA's website. Download the "EA Download Manager". Make an account or login if you already have an EA account. Regsiter your Mass Effect key in that program (or elsewhere on EA's site might work too). You can then download, install, and launch the game straight from this program. You will never need your DVD again.

Both free apps, use google. Or just order a new DVD drive, not sure why you don't want to replace it. A sata read/write dvd/cd-rw/cd-r is only like $20. BeavermanA
Um... dude. You just posted how to make a copy of a DRM protected PC game, that's a major no-no by Gamespot's ToU. May want to make sure that doesn't become a habit... :?

The guy doesn't want to buy a drive, then don't suggest it.

The solution is creating a folder called Disc 1 with all the data from disc 1 obviously, and a folder called Disc 2 with the data for Disk 2. When asked to "insert" disc 2 just point it to your folder called disc 2 and you'll be set.

Is backing up DRM'd cds illegal? It's not like they are of any use without the cdkeys, or a hack that breaks the actual DRM system :S

I'd think backing up a non-DRM dvd would be worse, because those would actually work for people other than the rightful owner.

Yea I don't see how making a virtual backup is illegal, that's all you get when you buy a digital download game. I have backups of Steam and EA download, and Ubisoft download manager games. Steam even supports backing them up to dvds. Just saves you the time of having to download it again if you want to reinstall. Making a copy of the data isn't piracy, it is useless without a key to activate it and permanently attach it to your account. If you're trying to bypass or remove the DRM, then obviously that is illegal, and I never suggested anything of the sort.

The problem with making a virtual back up is that in order to do so you will likely have to break some form of DRM on the disc, which is against the DMCA, and inturn isn't allowed to be discussed here on G-Spot :(

Exactly. Gen_X explained it way better than I did though. :)

Giantbomb would be the solution to this. Too bad it never really took off forum-wise.

Then you will likely miss out unless you replace it or get an external

He has both, and his desktop has the busted DVD drive while his laptop doesn't, but the laptop is too weak to run games. Just read all of the posts, and it becomes obvious.

I believe that is the Asus dvd-drive. I have that one and it gets the job done. I have two of them for two different builds. TC, you need to go buy one.

He's copying the files from the disks, to his laptop then to his computer.
