I am about to buy a new mobo and cpu and install them on a computer where I already have a mobo and xp installed.

I am a little confused about how to go about installing it. Not the physical install, I can do that. What drivers should I remove? Should I remove the SATA drivers?

Just a basic or any tips you have would be great.

Also- should i back up the harddrive?

I would heavily recommend a fresh reinstall of Windows.

You might be okay if all you were doing were replacing damage components with the same make and model of it, but a system upgrade like that will more than likely cause instability issues in the long run.

A windows repair might work, but a motherboard change its usually best to reinstall windows.

Format FTW, I do not think you have much of a choice here.

exactly, no choice, I doubt windows will even boot, but if it does it will be hell slow. Backup and reinstall. Its your only option.

its best to do a fresh install but if you can't be bothered doing that, you should remove any display and chipset drivers. you shouldn't have to remove anything else

i had vista with an nvidia chipset mobo. replaced it with an intel P35 mobo and it worked. only had to remove the old chipset drivers and install the intel drivers

Uninstalling your old mobo drivers might work just fine, because the chipset is totally different in the new mobo and there won't be any collisions on that part. Yet fresh copy of Windows is always the best solution in these scale of hardware changes.
