Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202

Is it good for overclocking?

How does it compare to Q9650? or Q9450?

Is it worth it to get now or should I wait?

Thanks! :)

You don't need to overclock that beast. I think they're completely unnecessary right now, but overkill also means that you won't be behind the times anytime soon.

I'll take it that means its a really good CPU?

Is the Q9650 any better? or Q9450?

From the reviews I've seen they destroy most quads in the price to performance ration, although I think they need their own MB and RAM.

why not q9550? being an owner of this chip, i think it's amazing. TBH though, i think I would've gotten the i7 if I waited till now to build a PC

the i7 920 is close to other quads in the 1000$ price range excluding the other i7's. i7 920 is truly a beast and it beats those cpus you mentioned very easy. They need their own mobo and ram and i think they are worth it if your building an entire new pc

I think it's very impressive. Get it now. Later you can upgrade to a 6 core 12 thread beast on 32nm.

So is Artic Silver 5 used only for the CPU? And also I heard that trying to get off the thermal paste the Core i7 comes with messes it up or something?

Here's the quote: After having been misled by the NewEggers -- when my i7 arrived -- I scraped off the Shin-Etsu G751(I think this is the thermal paste it comes with) and cleaned it with 90% isopropyl using coffee filters (which probably damaged the surface). It was only later that I read an Intel doc for the i7 to learn about which compound they ship with. (search for 320837.pdf)

For an air cooler, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003 can't be beat. But if you're going i7 and want to overclock, I'd go with water cooling. Those chips get quite hot. 130w TDP IIRC. The C2D/C2Q were 65w-90w. For thermal paste, get some Arctic Cooling MX2. It's the best on the market right now, better than AS5 and non-conductive.

Shin-etsu is another very good thermal paste. It's not used by intel... well not that I have heard of, they usualy already apply paste on the heatsink. Some say shin-etsu is better then AS5.

Also Kelmar You should know Core i7 920 2.6ghz Suffer of huge lack in game not optimized for quad Core / Core i7
It why overclockign it can get you over up to over +20fps just having ur core i7 at around 3.3ghz make a huge differance from 2.6ghz tough

like +6 to +10fps if you game at 1920x1200 It why Overclocking is likely necessary for good performances tough it sure does a nice job not overclocked as it get about same FPS AS q6600 3.4ghz When i siwtch to Westmere if i do il probabvely overclock the Westmere as it like so necessary for get huge boost :D
But Perhap westmere (gulftown) gonna be so good over bloomfield i hope so :D

I was thinking of upgrading once westmere came out but i dont really see it cesserary. Hardly any pc game use 4 cores let alone 6 cores when westmere comes along. Now am thinking of waiting for a price drop on the i7 to get the 920 or 940. It will be while before games require 6 cores. Video editing photo shop people will most likely benefit from 6 cores gamers not likely at all.

It needs new ram and new motherboard and they aren't cheap.

I am not upgrading my 8800GT and Q6600 for a long while. It plays every game I need to play just fine.

Ditto Im getting a new Rig soon And i dont plan on going for the i7 Gamesa re only now starting to use quads, but when they do start to optimize games for i7, they will have optimized the quad core also . Its why Im buying a Quad Core, I cant see it needed to be replaced for many a year. 2 cores are currently most popular, quad cores are now coming into play and i7's are the latest entry It will be years for the Quads to replace the Duo Cores, by which time you'll have enough to rebuy and get an i7 lol

As much as I'd like to build a nice i7, I'll wait until the prices come down a bit. A Quad will do me just fine for now.

Maybe I'll build it when Windows 7 is nice and tight, SP1 and all.

The core i7's are awesome, but not many people can afford them right now. A core 2 quad will be more than sufficient for pretty much any game at the moment. But if you have the money to spend go for it.
