"As you probably know, Intel is working on their own graphics card. Most people scoff at this idea, considering that Intel was rumored to buy NVIDIA so that they could have graphics cards. However, in a few years (late 2008/2009), Intel is planning on becoming a serious threat to the market dominance owned by NVIDIA and ATI. Intel is claiming that by late 2008 they will have at least sampled a card with multiple cores (up to sixteen) on one die. They also claim they will be able to do this on a 32nm architecture. This 16 core, 32nm GPU is estimated to run sixteen times faster than the 8800GTX." - Techpowerup

so.... (clears throat) any thoughts?

Well, considering Intel has finally nabbed most of the former 3DLabs team of engineers which is not surprising considering they have work with them before and Intel is also obtaining PowerVR's latest SGX GPU for future mobile GPUs hopefully they will be better than the current ones.

It bet it's sooner than that.  Otherwise they risk losing ground to AMD again and after the beating they took in '06 I don't think they want to go through that again.  Not if they're smart anyway...

i dunno if this thing will take off though. knowing intel they're gonna pace themselves, so they won't release some ultra pwn card right away. and there's enough AMD and nvidia fanboys out there who aren't gonna bite the bait.

Intel already is the worlds largest GPU provider with its none game GPU market.  A huge number of computers sitting in office buildings have Intel Extreme, etc.

If they did it right, meaning come out with something better than both NVIDIA’s and ATI’s offerings for the same price, they could be very successful.  And considering the kind of R&D budget Intel has compared to ATI and NVIDIA, they could do it comparatively as almost an after thought, if they wanted to.

Intel's stock is dropping enormously. they just layed off 10,000 people several months ago. their R&D budget is less than that of ATI or nVidia. They have been working on nanoprocessors longer because the market they're in called for it more so than that of GPUs. so they have the technology to produce a microprocessor. the problem lies in other architectural aspects. shaders, vertex shaders, geometry shaders, unified shaders... all the research ATI and nVidia have done. so regardless of the speed for Intel's GPU, it doesn't mean it'll perform on par with future d3dx10 cards by ATI and nVidia.

Finally, someone will push energy efficiency in the GPU market.

But ATI and nVidia own so many patents, it's unlikely that Intel will be able to compete. But they're doing the right thing. With AMD/ATI moving towards GPU's on die with CPU's, Intel would've been playing catch up for a very long time. But it's inevitable, Intel will be playing catch up with AMD/ATI regardless of how quickly they get started.

Ah you are kidding right?

*wonders if Wesker was under a rock during the Precott days*

Admittedly niether nVidia nor ATi are particularly good at it either...

I'm an Intel fan, I know of the NetBurst era. Those days are gone. Intel has had a major management reshuffle, and you can bet that they'll push performance per watt from here on out.

I'll bet you a box of your favorite cookies that once again Intel will fall on bad habits. It's inevitable; history proves that again and again. Each one of the 4 major 'processor' manufactures have succumbed to the bloated transistor due to complancy within their management structure.

Also, and I know Intel is a huge manufacturing player but it *will* be their first foray into an acutal GPU not an onboard product. Even nVidia with a long history of high-end GPUs has fallen on their face more then once.

Maybe, but the same goes for AMD as well. After all, they were the first to start the GHz war. However, with high-k metal transistor gates, Intel will be able to make VERY energy efficient chips on their 45nm processor. This is big news as transistors have remained silicon based for over 40 years, now that's all about to be changed. We could probably see processors fit under the 100w TDP limit in excess of 3.8GHz using this new technology. This should allow Intel to best K8L, until Nehalem is ready to go in 2008.

Wesker,

I guess we'll have to wait and see :) Obviously I have no faith in a smooth tech switch over and even less in Intel nailing it the first time in the GPU market. I'm not being bias though as I've said above I don't think any of these companies will avoid reproducing high energy consumption products in the future regardless of the process they are manufacturing on.

They all get lazy and complacent at some point or succumb to the pressures of being behind the 8 ball competition wise and end up forcing out a product.
