Well no surprise here from Intel, its a beast and offers the best price/performance compared to the i7's AND the Phenom II X4's. It overclocks to 4.2Ghz on air and its clock for clock performance AND the performance/watt ratio is better than the PII X4's...i think once the price of motherboards drops a bit they are the best choice for new buyers that dont want to bust the bank!

Well if you already have an i7 there really is no reason to fuss, in fall 2010 or winter 2011 the i9 should come out so might as well start saving your money =p

As for me the new CPUs look pretty promising. Looks like i'll be saving some money for the spring for a nice upgrade

The inconsistent performance results when they were comparing an AMD Dragon system with Phenom II against an i7 machine. The performance numbers were drastically skewed in Intel's favor, leading us to believe they are willing to take bribes in order to skew results in the favor of one company (although the i7 machine would've won anyway, it discredits the actual performance level of Phenom II).

True Intel shouldn't have to skew numbers if their processors are going to win in a benchmark anyway. Personally I like both companies but in the end it's my wallet that will decide which of them I go with. I'd sure like to see some more affordable X58 motherboards.

Perhaps they may even release a new chipset my friend. I'm not sure. My best guess though is that hopefully some new motherboards will be out in the coming weeks. As for the price I'd say hopefully $100-$150.

f tat by may amd will release its amd phenom 64 x6 cpus codenamed Leo and Dragon intel ma rule now but come mid 2010 i can count there days left on a calendar.

also for those mobo questions MSI is leading the cheapskate charge withunder 60 pounds (currency not weight) boards comingsometimes later this week which they hope to have a micro-atxlittle brother mfor in the coming month after. these boards (omiting the yet to be seen micro-atx) will support crossfire/sli and be all we have come to expect of current non i7 high quality mobos (2 pci-e x16 2.0, lots of ram slots, improved piping, 1 button OC of ram and cpu)

Intel came out with their first 6 core a year before AMD did and it still runs faster than AMDs new 6 core. I doubt AMD will over take Intel any time this decade. AMD is still having money problems while Intel is solid. Intel is also close to releasing it's 8 core processors for servers probably in the next few months. The best AMD can do is lower their price to give their consumers a cheaper alternative. With Intel releasing chips like the I5 which costs less and give better value, I doubt AMD can do much.

Whats confusing about it? i5 are for more mainstream audience and the i7 is for hardcore pc users more or less. The only problem i have is that these have a new socket so some people might purchase the wrong mobo for the new i7/i5 which use 1156. The "older" i7 use 1366. Maybe they should have named these i6? I dunno.

In many gaming circumstances, yes, but it's main point is it's price/performance.

It's not really confusing....Core i3 will be LGA 1156. Core i5 will be LGA 1156.Core i7 8xx will be LGA 1156. Core i7 9xx will be LGA 1366. Core i9 XXX will be LGA 1366.

washd123

Well, with Lynnfield they built the Northbridge chipset ON the CPU which eliminates the need for it on the P55 boards. It's still there on the X58 boards though. Also, the on-die chipset only does 16X PCI-E lanes. So it can only do one PCI-E 16X or two PCI-E at 8X each. For anything more they have to add on a seperate Nvidia N200 Chipset, which is used on motherboards like the ASUS WorkStation and EVGA Classified in the X58 lineup.

The on-die chipset is also what helps decrease the manufacturing cost for the motherboards and for the CPUs somewhat.

Yeah it is tempting to go and buy these new shiny toys when they come out isnt it. I think i'll be fine with my rig for another year maybe two? my plan is just to upgrade my gpu with a new Nvidia/ATI card coming this fall.

The whole point of these new CPUs was to fix the socket 'cause the 1366 Socket (they think) was flawed; my alternate would have been simply to call 'em i6es.

i would wait. there is also usb 3.0 to consider, that will be pretty big when it arrives.
