AMD's latest processor can about match an Intel Core2 Quad processor. But it will not get near an i7.

That said, you'll pay a lot extra for the i7 performance. A performance you may not even need, if your other components are holding the CPU back.

AMD is excellent value for money, if you look at the Phenom II series of quad / tri core CPUs I have never built an Intel rig and really wont need to, as when you compare real world performance of the top lines of both AMD and Intel CPUs you will not see any difference.

Intel do have the better performing CPUs but they come at a premium. For example when comparing real world performance of a Intel Core i7 920 vs AMD Phenom II X3 720 you really will not notice any difference unless you do synthetic benchmarking (where the Core i7 is king), video editing or photo editing.

In gaming the tri core AMD Phenom II X3 720 can beat the Intel Core i7 920 in a few games. Price difference: Intel Core i7 920 = £245 vs AMD Phenom II X3 720 = £122 (or an even more suitable competitor AMD Phenom II X4 920 = £160) Do you really wanna spend £100 more when u get the same experience with the cheaper CPU when ur watchin HD videos or gaming.

Thats not the end of it either, you have to spend more on a core i7 motherboard and get ddr3 ram. When you have bought all of this you could of got 2 AMD phenom II systems for the same price. AMD highlights value for money (bang for buck) these days

amd and intel are about the same price wise, intel currently has the leader in all cpu, which costs 1200-1400$.. amd and intel both have their strong points, id personally go with amd though, seems to preform better at higher resolutions than anything in its class

only if were talkin bout the 1200-1400$ i7, any other i7 is about the same as an amd 920-940

thing is, a lotta simpler folk like to say "intel is better" because they got cpus that are 2-4x the price of any of amd's and are a bit better... most of those cpus they got though are unnecisarily fast, and their not in the same price range so not a proper amd vs intel comparrison .. just cuz amd doesnt got their head in the clouds with pointless speed for 1400$ doesnt mean amd is inferior

Well we have seen different benchmarks then lol and even a Q9550 it's overall a better processor than a Phenom II 940 in my opinion.

Phenom ii 940 was on par or slighly more than a Q9400. 920 was slighly more or on par with Q9300.

What that's telling me is a Q6600 overclocked to 3Ghz would compete well with the Phenom II.

i7 is where you want to be going if you truely want better processor.

No, the Q9550 it's generally faster than the Phenom II and the i7 920 isn't that faster than the Q9550 in games but of course it's probably because games aren't optimized for that arquitecture and doesn't support hyper-threading.
