My comp is mostly used for school work and gaming.

Neither of those are worth buying now. What CPU do you currently have?

I currently have an Intel Pentium 4 520.
Also im only choosing between these two because besides these two there are i7's and quad cores but i just want a cheap two core processor. (Not buying from net, local computer shop.)

Does your local shop have any better C2Ds? How much are those two CPUs?

E5700= $120
E4500= $100

To my knowledge no it does not. It does have i7 and quad cores (like i mentioned before) but there a little pricey. Currently I have $150 (had 300 but bought GTS 250 with that). I also need to save for PSU so yea.

Intel is never really that great on the low end. This is what I bought a while ago from AMD.

$50 for a dual core processor :O

Unforunately prices are never that cheap here. I could always save for a Quad core or i7 but it'd probably be a waste, as I mostly using my computer for work purposes. I also do game but i'm hitting year 11 next year (senior) and a faster computer can benefit me with any assignments and/or homework I receive.

Should I save up for a 4 core processor or stick with the cheaper dual cores? I earn $50 a week btw.

If you're not going to be doing heavy gaming (probably a good idea if you're entering your senior year), buying a quad core wouldn't be money well spent. Out of those two, the E5700 will be much better. What country you live in?

Australia, yep, that explains it.

IT stuff costs heaps over here. My PC cost $1700, you could get a mammoth PC in the US for that money. Gives me the **** sometimes.

For that price point, maybe you should look at stuff from AMD. But then gain, that would mean you're going to shell out for a new mobo, and maybe for new ram too. I didn't know that a mobo that supports a P4 processor can also support a Core 2 Duo processor. That's a little odd.

Later P4s use the 775 socket.

None of them make a good buy. Are you even sure your motherboard supports 45nm CPU's, ifyou have a P4 520 that indicate you motherboard to be very old. (atleast 4years or more) I don't think your motherboard support the newer CPU's. save that money, you can upgrade to a AM3 build once you saved enough with cash.

The P4 he has uses the 775 socket, so it may work. Though I guess you would want to be sure before buying a new CPU.

I know what socket the 520 use, iv'e ran sevral P4's over the years, north, williamette.. .. .. I've also had multiple shots at flashing older p915/945 MB's to get them take the wolf (E5xxx) architecture and each time it ended up as a negative. I've got it to work on a p945 but the board wouldn't let the CPU run at anything else than the lower speedstep multipler. = don't work at full speed and thats still a negative. If it's a p915 i'd say impossible you won't get it to work, if it's a p945 (unlikely to paired with that old CPU) the E4x00/E6x00 should work with a modern bios, but ofc. does that motherboard need a biosflash, the E5xxx wolf core is most likely not going to work.

Where are you getting those prices from? Yes, I'm also from Australia, Melbourne. You can get an i3-550 for $134 or the E7500 at $132 from MSY. Also, you never mentioned what motherboard you're using, since that dictates what CPU you can use.

Do you know the model of your motherboard? Just because it's a socket 775, does not mean it will support all socket 775 CPUs.
