Is the Nvidia Network Access Manager Installed? Check in Control Panel and see if it shows up. I had this same problem on my desktop with funky connections. I uninstalled this utility and my connection became stable again. Let me know if that works.

if you uninstall the utility your operating system will use the built network manager built into the os. Uninstalling the Nvidia Network Access Manager will have no effect on the rest of your cpu.

He meant uninstall nVidia software, not install. I personally recommend to remove any wireless software. XP has one already, don't know why install another.magicalclick
thanks for clarifying magicalclick. and don't uninstall all the nVidia software, only the Network Access Manager.

Yes you can. look at it this was. Every motherboard has a chipset on it. That chipset can be from 1 of a number of manufacturers. The main ones are AMD, ATI, Intel, and nVidia. Most laptops have either an ATI, Intel, or nVidia graphics chipset on them. If the chipset is nVidia than Windows Update will attempt to install an automatic patch for it installing nVidia's Network Access Manager. If this gets installed it can really mess up your network connections and cause unstable connectivity. In saying that, go to your control panel and check in the Uninstall Programs Utility for the nVidia Network Access Manager. If it is there uninstall it and restart your computer. Here's another thing that you can try. Windows might be turning off the network adapter to save power. Turn off the power-saving option in the network adapter's properties : 1. Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, clicking Network and Sharing Center, and then clicking Manage network connections. 2. Right-click the connection, and then click Properties. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 3. On the Networking tab, click Configure. 4. On the Power Management tab, clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box, and then click OK.

Network Access Manager has nothing to do with hardware. You can treat is like a IE toolbar or FireFox plug-in or something. I can make one myself if I want to. Just like those photo things comes with digital cameras, complete garbage and unnecessary. XP already can already read/copy the photos and do whatever you need without extra crapwares. More software installed = more baggage to deal with.magicalclick
This isn't necessarily a just a hardware issue. Network instability can be caused by a whole range of things. Just trying to give him things to attempt to do to fix the problem.
