It really depends on which video card you are looking at. Like for instance, 256MB on an ATI/AMD RadeonX1600PRO will never do that kind of resolution, but 256MB on a Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS might be able to do that. So, it really depends on what video card you are looking for

I was planning on getting a geforce 8600 gts, which from what I heard was about as good as a 7900 gt/gtx or for you ATI guys about a x1900 xt.

Not for dx 10 games, they'll most likely need 512MB or more @ 1600x1200.

for the 8600? that should run DX10 games okay, but the 7900 GS will not be able to run DX10 games at all mostly because DX10 cards need A) geometry shaders B) unified shader architecture

teh 7900 has none of those

At 1280x1024 maybe, but the 8600's were never designed to game at 1600x1200,you need at least a 8800GTS 640MB for that resolution.

depends on the game. if you are planning to play oblivion with texture mods you aren't gonna get far, as those eat alot of memory, and if Crysis is anything to go by, that game will take a chunk out of vram as well.

But as of now there are no DX10 games - and you need Vista to run DX10.
