right now i have front left, right, center, and a sub.

my receiver supports up to 7.1 and i already have 2 speakers for 5.1.

but if i go 5.1, i'm gonna have to mount the speakers on walls and run wires a good distance...which would be a lot of work. is going from 3.1 to 5.1 really awesome? or is it not that great?

I thoroughly enjoy my 5.1, so I say yes, it's that awesome.

Yeah I think its worth it. 5.1 adds depth and ambient sounds from the rear. Though you don't exactly need anything big.

It's good but quality is more important also when you get into surrounds sound you need to start worrying about room acoustics and positioning.

This. 5.1 will really enhance every part of your entertainment system. The 3 best purchases I have ever made are my PS3, my HDTV and my 5.1 system. Im just waiting until I can upgrade to 7.1 but right now not much stuff supports it so I can hold out
