I have ordered a PC with a core i7 2.66 and was wondering if an aftermarket fan cooler to sit on the CPU totally necessary?

Or will the case fan do it's job good enough?

Sorry but I am new to the PC gaming scene after consoles not satisfying my RTS addiction.

You must have a fan of some sort. If you ordered a retail CPU it will come with the stock heatsink and fan. If you ordered an OEM CPU you need to get yourself an aftermarket solution.

If it doesnt have one with it you need to buy one, but it should.

If you bought a retail CPU, it should come with a stock heatsink which would be fine if your not overclocking. However if you do Overclock then an aftermarket heatsink is a must.

A heatsink + fan is required. If this is a name-brand system, one will already be installed for you. If you are putting it together yourself, check the processor you bought to see if it comes with one (as mentioned before, all retail-boxed procs will have one)

Without the CPU heatsink and the fan your PC will burn. so yes, it is very necessary.
