I havn't played online in quite a while.. but when i did it was awesome and very popular. With the expansions it's probably even more popular. The only thing that annoyed me was if you didn't have the expansion, you couldn't play with people that did.. it was very annoying as it divided the community and meant less people playing. Not sure if they've fixed that up or not.. would be awesome if they have, similar to COH how you can play.. otherwise there would be three seperate communities for the game which would mean a lot less people able to play together.
The vanilla and the Asian Dynasties expansion have lots of players on still. Though I reccomend playing the Vanilla as Asian Dynasty is a mess right now as the ranking system is all screwed up.
