Im hoping to build a new pc in a few months but im thinking of sticking with my original plan of getting the quadcore phenom ii 955. Am i better of sticking to this plan and saving money? or should i get the hexcore cpu?

ive allready bought the new motherboard, its am3 and with the 890 chipset, if this hexcore cpu requires a bios update then i wont be able to install it anyway

if ur going amd you shouldent even consider getting anything but the hexcore black edition imo cuz of how cheap it is. honestley tho i see no reason to go amd i would just get a i7 920 or 930 they are better anyway... and the x58 board will last for a long time so you can upgrade to a gulftown chip when the price drops which those blow everything else out of the water...

I think I would go with a hex core, IF I had the ability, and each cpu core had a 3.0 ghz minimum...

If it has below 3.0 ghz Then I would not bother.

People will likely disagree with this, but I guess this is a thread about oppinions anywyas. BTW, hope you end up liking your new build

^^

I think it's worth it. The 3.2GHz is only $310: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103849&cm_re=amd_x6-_-19-103-849-_-Product

If you want to get the hexacore, just realize that you will have to not upgrade for along time. and seeing how its very close to the i7s, i would not bother with it. I say get a cheap quad that would last you 2 years easily, and then you dont know what you are going to want after these 2 years.

Defiantly worth it for a new build. not much more than a quad and has more features, plus for multi-thread apps like maya, photoshop after effects etc there is a significant difference.

Well, it is very close to the cheaper I7s at STOCK speed..... I believe the I7s still have more OCing headroom and beat it out on a few benches by a small margin.

EDIT: Scratch that, the 6-core does not improve things all that much at all in games, the 955/965 will serve you well enough.

if your in desperate need of a hexacore nab the new pheon II x4's based on the new architecture and then unlock the other 2 cores.. otherwise dont bother.
