i know this is kind of a general question

but

is an apple computer worth it

i currently have a gateway notebook with a AMD 64 processor (2 years old)

and i didnt get an apple the first time because they were far too expensice and not much of my current software would have worked on it.

but now its changed (with more programs like MS office being offered on both operating systems)

and ive experienced problems with my current computer like it being slow, it crashes, the screen flickers, lack of built in programs (ive had to download quite a few little programs that would come standard on a mac)

im just wondering

is it worth an extra $500

I'm assuming you're looking at the Macbook/Macbook Pro? They're excellent laptops - if I were in the market for a laptop (and I might be in the near future), I'd definitely spring for a Macbook Pro myself. However, I'm not exactly tight in terms of budget, and I was brought up on Macintosh computers so I'm used to some of their little quirks and differences.

If your only gripe about your computer is that it's running slow, I'd chalk that up to poor maintenance on your part - there are plenty of things you can do to a computer to keep it running fast, and while most people generally get one or two things, relatively few people manage to get all of them. So if you're just unhappy with how your current laptop is running, that might not be (directly) OS-related, but rather just due to improper care.

That being said, $500 is a pretty big mark-up - and while I certainly consider it worth the price in my case, you may not, especially if you're not familiar with Mac operating systems

Yes they are very stable, very fast now they they have switched to Intel's latest Core 2 Duos, and they run Widnows flawlessly

Go for it.

It depends on what you are using it for.

Typing. No.

Gaming. Heck No.

Video Editing. Yes.

I'll be honest with you, I'm biased and i dislike macs. Basically, if you're going to use it for programs like microsoft word and some video editing software then go for it. But i must tell you, macs are fairly incompatible when it comes to certain programs, even powerpoint. If i had a dollar everytime someone tried to run a presentation from a PC on a mac and find that most of their figures were transposed and symbols missing, i'd be rich.

There are other examples of incompatibiliy with specialized software that i can think of. However, i do not know whether the new mac OS (i.e., windows   ) is compatible with most of the newest software, but if it is then you should have no problem.

I don't get the typing comment either.

Honestly, Macs are high quality, well built computers. You can't play games on them very well, but you can edit and create videos, music, photos and stuff like that very well. They have cool little extras like webcams and stuff built in, but you do pay a premium for them. They aren't very upgradeable usually, but they are known to be very reliable and last a long time.

It just depends what you are looking for in a computer.

do you upgradeable like you cant add more memory, RAM etc. to it

or

do you mean you cant install updates like windows does (it does that windows update thing every once it a while)

Well apple keyboards tend to go flying across the room once you hit keys.

I mean physical upgrades. Putting another CPU in, for example. Apple updates the firmware and OS via the web, similar to how Microsoft does with Windows.

If I was buying a Mac, I'd make sure to get all the RAM and stuff I wanted for the life of the computer. I'm not telling you it's impossible to upgrade...but it's much harder and more limited.

I'm curious why do people say mac's are better for video editong and modelling. I have a good pc, if I say so myself and I use adobe after effects which is pretty much the best movie editor, and its for mac's as well, how are they better for it?

yes, you can play games on a mac.  yes, the hardware is upgradeable (even the RAM).  i just got a macbook pro 2 months ago and i'm very happy with it.  very nice, stable computer that was well worth the money.  plus some of the programs available for macs i really love, such as aperture which is a great counterpart to run with photoshop.

I meant by the "typing" comment that if that was what you were going to use it for, then just get a cheapo MS XP Laptop.Â
