Is an HD 5770 a good upgrade for this system?

My friend is selling me his old one for $40.

I'm worried that it might not be worth it or might not run on my PSU.

I don't know much about cards lol.

Thanks!

Current system:

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

4GB RAM

ATI Radeon HD 5400 (512 MB)

PSU 375w

If the 375w power supply isn't from a good brand I wouldn't want to use a 5770 with it.

He's only going from a 5400 to a 5770. The same PSU should be fine.

The 5450 uses 13W maximum. The 5770 peak is 85-110 and it requires a 6 pin connector (I don't see the correlation between the two).

Thus having a good tier 2 or higher powersupply will really help, especially since he has less than 400watts

Good upgrade.  Power supply won't pull it when stressed.  Have a look at this CoolerMaster 500W supply: $43 after rebate.

Do this^

Don't worry about replacing the PSU. All you have to do is remember where the cables go when you are installing. You can't mess it up unless you forget to plug in a cable. Even so it won't permanently damage your system.

Thanks! I'm only doing this as a stop-gap solution to hold me over until I'm ready to get a whole new system.

Well it's a great "stop-gap."

Those two cards have essentially nothing in common...

I'd get a new PSU just in case. I had my Sapphire reference HD 5770 in a PC that had a 430w Thermaltake psu. The recommended power requirement for the HD 5770 is a minimum of 450w. However, that Thermaltake has a +12V rail that pulled 52 amps. So, it was beefy enough to use with the HD 5770.
