Looking for a new game and I was thinking about this one.
I only played the first and second like 12 years ago. I never liked them but I might be willing to give it another go. I hear people rave on about Civ 4, heard nothing good about 5.

For me Civ 5 is better than Civ 4 ... maybe because of the hexagon tiles, instead of the usual ones, thus making me pay more map awareness of the surroundings and etc. Not to mention with DirectX 11 it looks beautiful, the game depth is as in all the other games in the Civ franchise - superb. Plus if you also get the expansion you will get addicted to Civ5 even more - since it adds religions, spies and the AI improvements. I myself had the chance to play a game with the expansion while I was at my friend's house but I am more than hyped for it.
With the Steam sale coming closer (hopefully) you may get the chance to see a Civ5 GOTY at some point for a low price, and (hopefully) the expansion as well, even though it came out last week :P
I like Civ 4 & 5, but you have to like optimizing things to have fun with these games. I like to plan out where I am going to put each city plus all the buildings I will put in it and units I will make. Ultimately, this means trying to win the various victory types in the least number of turns on varying difficulty levels. Some play the game like a role-playing game, where they are the historical leader and try to make decisions as that leader would. Others play it because they like the little historical notes in the game.
I like how the maps are all random, so you never know what lands you will have near you and explore, or what AI players (civilizations) you can exploit (haha!). Every game I start I think, "This might be the one with perfect lands that I can break my Least Turns record." I guess I play the game like Chess, a life long pursuit to get better. I've only played the more recent ones though. Plan to get Civ 5 expansion at the first sale (33% off is good enough).
It autoresolves, and it depends on factors like the skills/xp of the army, tile placement (this may or may not be true) and the armies' health beforehand. If a fully leveled bowmen went against a new tank, then theres quite a bit of a chance that the bowmen will win. I recommend playing Civ 4 first, because honestly i liked it more. But...you also may like civ 5 more because it is a lot more streamlined. I personally did not like 5, but loved 4.So Civ 4 or Civ 5?

I never really understood the combat. Is it auto resolve or whoever has the bigger army wins?
It's not about the combat, it's about everything else, even combat is a form of "management" not real combat.I will get it if It goes on sale. I don't really like the combat from what I have seen though.

I bought CIV 5 GOTY and so far I am disappointed.
The combat is not very exciting. What can I say it's auto resolve... People said the combat is much better in Civ 5 than 4. I don't know how auto resolve can be any different.
I just started a small campaign. I was going the peaceful route just to build my empire up. The computers never wanted to trade, attack others, or do anything. I ended up getting attacked by 2 people and barabians. I wiped them out which was just taking turns back and fourth.
Right now the game is very bland. Build farm here, build mine there, extend your roads to city, purchase another tile, do another upgrade. Next turn, next turn, next turn, etc.
Unless there is something I am not getting this game is extremely boring and overrated. Any Total War game is much better.
Civ is like playing a board game. If nobody is attacking anybody, you should try a harder difficulty setting. The combat is much better in Total War, but it is also easy to exploit the AI in Total War and win battles you really have no business winning based upon the units on the field. Civ is all about stats, attributes, and in Civ 5, unit placement. Both are excellent games.I bought CIV 5 GOTY and so far I am disappointed.

You clearly like action games, so why did you even buy it? Its not a combat game. its a Civilization building game. Turn the difficulty up, playing on chieften doesnt cut it.I bought CIV 5 GOTY and so far I am disappointed.

I like building games and I just find it a bit bland. Feels like the computers do nothing.
I will turn up the difficulty. I am playing right now.
Be glad. You are one of the few that is immune to the one-more-turn syndrom that has been plaguing millions of people.
You should of tried EU III or Crusader Kings II, both far superior to CIV V and cheaper to.Shadowhawk000You can't handle the depth (AKA boring factor) of the new Civ that went for slightly more action than before so I'm just gonna recommend raw, generally flawed games with a lot more depth and lack of action....what?

Lol exactly, i bet he would faint just by looking to the game map
if you like 4x strategy games, then your going to love it. Civ5 has some fun scenarios like the Game of thrones from the community.
Civilization 4 is timeless, I still play it on and off to this day. It's a game of stats, where you have optimize and synergize your empire, so you need some brains to play! But it's charm and rewarding, not punishing, gameplay makes the game, in my opinion, one of the best ever made.
The Civ are strategy games that make you think in the long term. If you're looking for something where you build a bunch of units and overwhelm your enemies in a few turns than Civ isn't for you. You can actually win a game of Civ without ever going to war at all.
