different tv manufacturers use different standards for determining contrast. Look for a cnet review and see what they think.

Pretty much. In fact, i dont believe theres any LCD out there with a real measured contrast ratio of higher than 750:1. You'll want to read up on whatever LCD you are interested in. Their inflated stats arent enough to make an informed purchase.

I'm guessing this will be your first HDTV. Also, since you're getting it for Christmas I'm assuming you aren't the one buying it, so just be happy with whatever it is and don't worry about stats.

If it is native 1000:1 (not dynamic), it is an average to low performing LCD. You can buy a much better LCD (for probably a lot more money) or get a minimum of 15,000:1 native contrast with a plasma along with no motion lag.

The quoted contrast ratios are just marketing bull crap. Don't pay any attention to the numbers.

That's why you look at "native contrast ratios." That should be the true contrast ratio although there are not many manufacturers that provide that info.

I agree. Some LCDs tout a large contrast ratio, but the tv looks unimpressive. I really don't think the contrast ratio is that important. Look for a strong name brand, decent warranty, and pricepoint. I picked up a 46 Bravia 1080p LCD for only 1100. I love it. My girl thinks her 32 Samsung looks better, but its only 720p, and she doesn't understand those numbers.

She may be right as many 720p TV's do look better than 1080p. I for one would take any low priced 720p plasma over a low priced 1080p lcd any day.

Aren't Plasma tvs more prone to still image burn in? I read somewhere that Plasmas and CRTs were the most affected by burn in, so I would rather stay away from them for gaming. But I do agree, I've seen some remarkable 720p looking plasma tvs.I think my next purchase is going to be a 65in Mitsubishi DLP. That thing is beautiful and it's also 3D ready! I just have to take mine off the wall though and tell my wife that it was given to me.

Burn in on plasma is no where near as big an issue as it was in the past. But if you are one of those gamers that has 6-8H+ gaming sesions than it may be a good idea to aviod palsma.

It's very dependant on your brightness/contrast settings, but burn-in on newer plasmas shouldn't really be an issue any more unless you leave a static picture up there for hours on end and even then the newer plasmas have programs built into them to "wipe" this away. The big thing with plasmas is that there is no motion lag, better contrast, and better off-angle viewing.

I think plasmas are great!

I have my samsung plasma set at a really high contrast of 97 but the brightness is 37

I can play for more than 5 hours on PS3 without having to worry at all about burn-in

The only burn-in that I got was when I fell asleep one time for a while but it wasn't too bad

Most of it got removed by the screen scroll or white wash

The whole burn-in thing is really blown out of proportion these days
