yeah they only supported the game for several years and majorly overhauled it, besides it was free as long as you owned half-life until it became a standalone product

It's still free in the same sense since it's beta releases. It was a mod for Half-Life so you had to buy Half Life. When Valve released it, it was still free with Half-Life. Counter Strike Source is free with Half Life 2. The game is just free as long as you get Half-Life.

No it hasn't been free. Only 1.5 and lower are free. 1.6 is $10 and source is $20 you can't get either of them free. 1.5 you can download and still play as a mod if you have the original half life but otherwise no it's not free
so what if its "only" $5/$10/$20 dont waste your money, there is barely any diference trust me
besides guys you do not think about that 99% of the planets population has problems paying for stuff online, no mater it its "only" $5 or $0.05 they have no bank account , credit card nor would it be accepted from the country they loging in from
prepaid credit cards are also only available in a hand full of countries and even there you need at least to be legal to (have papers) to get one

Weird. I bought regular Half-Life and I've had Counter Strike free ever since the beta. Same thing with Source and Half-Life 2. For 1.5 and under, you still required Half-Life - so what's the difference?
Well if you got Source for free with HL2 you probably got the Game of the Year Edition that came with it, but you dont need HL2 to play Source, its a full stand alone game, so it's not free unless you pirate it, which you really can't thanks to Valves awesome CD keys

Me and all my friends and bought regular Half-Life 2 retail at its release. It came with Counter-Strike Source and the soon-to-be-released Half Life 2 DM. It was no "Silver" or "Game of the Year" edition. And when 1.6 came out, Steam did too. It seems all regular Half-Life keys were stored with Team Fortress Classic and Counter-Strike. I have my (regular) Half-Life case sitting right next to me as I type this.

Hardly, back when I was playing this game, I was 8/9/10/11. I started hacking and eventually got banned. One day at my grandpa's house, I noticed he owned HL. I wrote down his CD-Key, came back home, typed it in, and started playing CS again. Maybe there's just some sort of confusion going on here, but I know for a fact that I'm right.

You have no clue. CS 1.6 and 1.5 are totally different. If you have played both (playing 1.5 within days of playing 1.6) you would notice a large difference. The gameplay, the look, and the feel of the game. By making 1.6, Valve made CS 2x more fun, 2x more accessible, and 10x more popular.

I purchased Half-Life when it first came out. When CS 1.6 was released it was still free if you had Half-Life. If you buy Half-Life 2 you receive CS:Source with it free. So technically Counter-Strike can be free.

dude, i do have them all, yes if you want to split hair's there are diferences, but honestly the difference is not worth the money (IMO) especialy for someone who wants it free ftom the getgo
they all fast pasting shooters with near identical grafic so i stand by my point if you not a hard core CS fanboy its no mater what version you play they all (near) the same
Well it's not really free if you have to buy something else to get it, at least in my country it's considered false advertising to market something saying "buy this and you get this for free", since it isn't free if you have to buy something else to get it. You might get CS with HL, but it's still not free.

well you do need halflife1 as it is a mod of that, but that game (halflife1) you can pick up in most used game stores or your local fleemarket for like $1or just download that as well its so old noone cares
