I enjoyed City of Heroes/Villains. It did a lot to break from away from the standard MMORPG formula and in my opinion, that's always a good thing. Although, I do think CoH/V improved quite a bit once Cryptic stopped running the game and the new team took over.
As for their newer games, I didn't like Champions Online very much and the little bit of the Star Trek Online beta I played wasn't much fun either. Hopefully they can right the ship with Neverwinter Nights but I'm not sure. Bill ("you've been Flagshipped") Roper leaving Cryptic is probably a step in the right direction but it's going to take a little more than just that to win back my support.
In my book, Cryptic is batting one for three. Take that as you will...
It's not even that they are particularly bad, but their games are instanced to hell, so it's pretty crazy that they charge subscription fees for them.kieranb2000yeah this. While completely instanced, guild wars was f2p. For cryptic games, you need to pay 15$/month to play in your own shoes box. They are the Mcdonald of mmo. They quickly (2years) create mmo, make profit on box sale, push for lifetime subscription, do little content update and have a shop where you can buy stuff that should have been in the game, like races (and ships for Star trek online).
Alright, let me put it this way. Go into a room by yourself for the next 2 hours and then ask your mother to walk by, give you a pat on your back, and leave again. You have experienced their form of interaction in their games and the only reason that they charge a monthly fee.
I've played CoH and it was good but the formula is getting old now. As for Champions and Star Trek Online, ya they dropped the ball. Sure, some studios learn from their mistakes and can produce a good product but I have little hope for what ever Cryptic produces.

That sounds AWFUL. Especially the part where you said, they quickly create a new MMO, make profit on box sales and push for lifetime subscription. That alone already pisses me off. I have and never will buy a game from them.
their poor execution of their games make them bad imo
Both City of Heroes/Villains and Star Strek online had some really innovative ideas and awesome gameplay elements, but ultimately the games were poorly developed.
Look at my sig below, my top played game recorded by xfire is Champions Online. I have played City of Heroes and currently Champions Online. Champions Online is an improvement from city of heroes with experience from that game added on. I have faith Cryptic Studios will put out a good game.Jd1680a
213 hours isn't really a lot, especially for an MMO.

I have the opposite opinion. After playing Champions Online and Star Trek Online, I will never purchase from this company again. I'm not going to list the many reasons I have for not supporting this company any longer, but I will say that unless they have fired the people who made the decisions behind those two games I aforementioned, the new NWN game is doomed from the start.

Xfire failed to record my time on Sunday and Monday so it should be 12 hours or so higher. Plus I just started playing last month.I disagree that games like CoH/V were "heavily instanced" in the same sense that Guild Wars is. That's simply not true. Yes, the missions were instanced (I actually prefer this as I have horrible memories of spawn campers in EQ and other games) but the rest of the world was just as open as any other MMORPG.
I think it's unfair to judge this game based on Cryptic's previous efforts. The gameplay in Cryptic's MMOs has always been fun, if a little repetitive, and the main issue being the subscription fees for a guild-wars-esque instanced experience. This game however isn't an MMO, and assumably wont have subscription fee. I'm interested to see what Cryptic can pull off with a Single player/co-op RPG.kieranb2000
I understand your reasoning with the new NWN game not being a MMO, but after having bad experiences with Cryptic's decision making with Champions Online as well as Star Trek Online, I don't see how the new NWN game could have any hope of being a success. I took the gamble with those two games and lost, I'll let some one else do so this time and spectate.
On another note, I think I just have too high of expectations for MMO's now-a-days to let companies get away with releasing unfinished/buggy games and then continue to make some very poor decisions after. What I don't get is that I have tried many of the new MMO's over the last few years and am lost to as why people defend these games saying that it's a new game, give them time. It seems all of the games I tried were released WAY too early or were poorly done, it seems like a trend I want no part of anymore. They all feel like betas to me and not worth my time nor money, but then again I may be in the minority with that opinion. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
Sorry, you're correct. CoH/V was not heavily instanced, I keep forgetting about it since Cryptic no longer has any ties to it. But every single "MMO" that Cryptic has released since has been heavily instanced like Guild Wars.I disagree that games like CoH/V were "heavily instanced" in the same sense that Guild Wars is.
