There are a few hundred people playing at a given time. I haven't touched it since last year (November, to be exact), so I don't know if anything new has cropped up - but I find the game to be a run of the mill team game with few truly redeeming features when compared to other multiplayer shooters.
It's good once in a while - Power Struggle can be fun at times, but on the whole, I do not recommend this game as your primary multiplayer gaming staple.
how the hell are people so good at it ull soon find out

It's really easy to rake up prestige points. When a game begins, arm yourself with a shotgun and cap anything and everything that you can reach. Doing this will give you several hundred prestige points easily. After this, buy a SCAR and a sniper scope and snipe away to rack up kills and prestige points. Or, if you prefer, get a helicopter or a VTOL and baserape the enemy (some servers forbid this, however.) Rinse and repeat if you die.
It has the problem with game lagg which you don't need in an online game i got better fps in SP then in MP that's for sure. But i think the biggest problem was the nano suit idea, they shouldn't of added the suit in MP in my opinion ppl just stealth wait till sum1 runs past and shoot them in the back its lame.
1-The community is small, about 1.000 players at day, but most of them are die hard players -don't expect to obtain a great k/d ratio in your firts games-.
2-The game has 3 modes: Instant Action (deathmatch) Team Instant Action (team dethmatch) and Power Strugle. The first two are the land in that you must learn the basics of the game: aiming, dodging, strafing and the use of the nano suit powers. Cloack is almost useless since doesn't provide extra mobility and weaks your resistance to damage.
3-Power struggle is a mix between the Conquest mode in BF2 -take the flags and facilities- and Counter Strike -use the prestige points earned taking facilities and killing enemies in buying better equipment and vehicles. Here Cloak is a very powerful tool. The game is balanced in terms of infantry vs vehicles EXCEPT for the VSTOL, that is overpowered.
4-The game has 23 official maps, but over hundred of fan made custom maps -some of those even better than the official ones. The game has a insta-downloader that gives you the option to automatically install in your hard drive any new map you find in a server and play it at fly in matter of seconds, as in the UT series.
5-I think that Crysis Wars has a GREAT multiplayer but with a lot of room to improve, still, I spent over 300 hour in the mp.
If you're able to read in Spanish, I wrote a 80 pages review about the game here -some day I must translate the work, but I'm a bit lazy-:
