Is Dragon Age Origins' combat very different than Action RPGs such as Risen, Two Worlds 2, Witcher 2, Arcania, etc? If so, exactly how is it different?

Any responses will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Dragon age didnt fail now if you said dragon age 2 failed id agree with your statement..Even i was like i wish they had the six party player experiance..Dao was a fun game..One of the best rpg in the last 10 years in fact..Until the witcher 2 came out..Although i did like dao better than the witcher 2..Both games where actually quit fun and are the way rpgs should be..Shame what they did to dragon age 2..Epic fail was this game..Its on my h ard drive im so disgusted i dont even want to finish the game..Dragon age i loved every minute of it..

Well first of all, Dragon Age have more than 1 party member which means that if you want, you can either let them do stuff automatically or you can tell them when and how to cast stuff. In other words, you have full control over several characters in combat. This means that you are usually gonna have to have some strong tough dude to try to get enemies to attack him, while also having at least one character specialized in healing spells. It can be a bit tough to manage all this in real time that is why you can pause the game with the spacebar and issue commands then resume etc but this is not necessary if you don't want this more strategic and slower approach.

I haven't played Arcania nor Risen but compared to TW2 and W2 I'd say it's completely different. Personally I think in a good way, I liked DAO combat a lot.

Yes it is very different. The action RPGs you mentioned have...well action RPG combat, it's quick and fluid, you slash down one enemy and move onto next.

DA:O combat is more like classic RPGs like Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights, combat is slower and battles give lots of space for planning and trying different tactics. Also in DA:O you have a whole party that you can control 100%. Your party members can be played like they would be your own character. Especially on harder difficulties you will be pausing the game alot while giving orders to each party member.

Dragon Age is like a poor man's Neverwinter Nights 2. If you want a party based/turn based battle system, get something good, like NWN2 or Drakensang.

Well im not even going to start with Dragon age 2 Well it did "fail" it never reached the goal that the devs themself put up (spiritual successor of BG). Is it a bad game? No but it failed in the regards that it was not as deep and complex as i would have wished it to be.
