My friend and I have an excess of time to waste and we are wondering if it is actually possible to spend 5-6-10 hours on it nonstop? We love zombie games (played through Dead Island, Dead Rising, L4D1/2 multiple times on each game) and we cannot get enough. We have been following the DayZ and Project Zomboid games and we will be playing both once either comes out. I just want to know if DayZ is actually playable for long periods of time. We both enjoy the concept of an open world zombie apoc. game. Living in the woods and gathering supplies from a nearby town to stay alive with the very possible chance of some troll coming along and murdering us both for our beans (DAH BEANS!). Would like to hear some opinions about sustained gameplay over many hours. Thank you in advanced.

Forgot to mention. I DO realize it is only in its alpha stages. I would love to be a bugtester if it lets my friend and I live out our fantasy.

You basically have to spend hours and hours in this game if you want to make any real progress so absolutely. The game takes a lot of getting used to, learning to navigate a map with no compass takes some practice so definitely expect to spend a lot of time learning the ropes. Then you have all the zed to contend with (which are still way too overpowered, psychic zombies), and learning to keep your profile as low as possible so you aren't ganked by all the asshats running around the maps shooting people for sh*ts and giggles. If you use teamspeak and like to play as a team then you might consider joining The First Cav (if you are willing to be a helpful player instead of a bandit), they seem to be a good group of people to play with, they play very tactically and they expect their Cav to help others when they can in-game. It's fun, and tense, and will can easily burn hours if you aren't paying attention to time.

i would say yes, as long as you dont mind dying..... a LOT. average life expectancy currently is 30 minutes. you WILL die and have to start over frequently.

I want this soo bad, but i'm waiting for the steam summer sale to purchase! I've watched a bunch of youtube videos and it looks like so much fun. Still a little buggy, but overall looks like it would be alot of fun to play.

Ive put in about 50 hours. I will warn you now, nothing in any game feels as bad as when you lose all your epic loot to a bandit. Its the worst feeling ever.

It's an incredible game that would make you question some decisions you make in it that you wouldn't normally do in another game. I've been playing it nonstop so if you want some help in-game, just let me know. I'm also willing to play with anybody else too.

Yeah, it certainly looks that way. I wish it was exciting 50% of the time.. but I guess I'll have to find out. I don't think I'll have much patience playing it solo. I'll probably have to play it in a group.

I was just going to say... Playing with a group with goals and base camps is more fun than walking around looking for people to kill or bother.

Tons. There are about 10-15 AUS/NZ servers that are almost always filled at night.

If I play solo, I have a feeling I'll run into a case of mistaken identity. "Omg it's my first zombie sighting!" *BANG!* *runs towards body to loot it* "Ahhh sh** it's a human! Damn..."

Go inland and stick to remote areas for your suplies, there are plenty of barnsand cow sheds around that will keep tou stocked up on ammo, food and drink or you can live in the wilderness as there are now a lot more animals you can kill for food, you can also refil your water canister in ponds. However, this may get a bit boring after a while.

It looks so clunky though... Control and animation wise. I don't know, guess I'm the only one that gets un-immersed when the animations/controls/UI aren't polished. I'll wait for Arma 2: CO is on sale then I'll give it a try.

If you have a friend or two to play with you, then absolutly, you can spend dozens of hours in that game without even trying.

REforever101

Well without all of the walking, the risk/reward factor wouldn't be there. If you could just respawn and gather a bunch of supplies easily then dying is more of an annoyance rather than a real punishment. Since you spent 2 hours looting maybe 2 towns and staying alive in between, you're going to be invested a lot more into your character, making you really want to keep him/her alive. This in turn increases the suspense and intensity of really desperate situations and makes the game a whole lot more enjoyable.

That's something a lot of modern games don't have anymore. They go straight to the fun and only mildly punish failure. This reduces the investment that the player has in the game and thus reduces the risk/reward causing situations to be less intense and a lot less impactful on the player's overall experience.

The downside, of course, to this method is that you need to invest quite a bit of time to fully enjoy the experiance, and that's something most gamers don't wnat to do.

I just don't have enough time in one period to play for that long, can you log off and resume from the same spot, or do you have to play through all at once?

You can log off at anytime and when you come back you start right where you left off :)

Sometimes I play for 2-4 hours straight and other times I play 20-30mins, can do what ever you want :)

I will say though that it is a massive bummer when you do die. At the moment (At least in the NZ/AUS servers) there is more of a focus on killing others for no reason. Its far easier and quicker to get gear by just killing everyone that you see. Makes me worried for our gamers at the moment. That being said I have killed people maybe 3 times, only once in cold blood. He was in cherno and I was gearing up a friend of mine. You just dont waltz into that town alone with an M16 during the middle of the day >.>

You can log off and resume from the same spot, this also apllies across servers.

Just curious. I went to the website but I couldnt find anything, I do know that the world is supposed to be huge but can anyone clarify exactly how large it is, like square miles? Also how many people can be in a server at any one time?

225 square kilometers and you can have around 50 people on the server at a time (though I have heard there are some servers hosting double the amount of players). The map is absolutely MASSIVE! If you couldn't find the size of the map then you did not go to the site, it's the first thing you see. dayzmod.com

It really depends on which version you play. I don't really care for the latest one that gives you a flashlight and a bandage and that's it. It was more fun when you spawned with a pistol and some ammo.
