is deus ex a good game to still play?

If your a fan of good games, no matter when they were made, then yes. If your more of a "latest title" type of person then you will be put off by the graphics. Also, if you decide to play it make sure you fix a bug where at some point you cannot go forward because you cannot enter a boat (he gets stuck on a pier and cannot progress). There is fix for it, but I can't recall what it is - can probably google it.

I still think games from that era look good, they are a little bland but not to a level were it can harm the actually gameplay which is usually ahead of the current crop (deus ex, system shock, the jedi knight series are a few of my favourite examples).

It's superior to many games these days in terms of gameplay, the graphics are ugly but you get used to them fast enough.

Yeah its actually a really good game, but what puts me off the game is the unappealing graphics and animation.

Even if you're put off by 10 year old graphics there are mods out there you can use to give the game much better textures. It still isn't going to look like Crysis mind you, but it'll look better nonetheless. As for the game itself, no one is exaggerating when they say it's one of, if not the, best game ever made. The game gives you a ton of freedom to go about missions in the way you wish (and usually there are several ways to go about doing one thing in the game; you can go in via brute force or if you're willing to examine everything carefully you'll probably be able to find a much easier way). On top of that there's a ton of detail paid to the environments, dialogue, and characters so if you're really critical of everything you hear and see you're going to have a lot of awesome moments that make you feel pretty smart. You know how in most games you have to do dumb stuff (like follow a guy you know is going to turn around and betray you) because the game won't let you progress otherwise? That doesn't happen in Deus Ex. In Deus Ex if you think a guy is going to betray you you can shoot him in the back of the head at any time and go on doing things your way. It's also worth mentioning that because you can cut off problems before they start in this game, and because the plot constantly has friends turning into foes and foes into friends, you wind up becoming increasingly paranoid of everyone and everything around you in the game (which is what the game devs were going for since it fits right in the game's theme). At the start of the game you'll probably be content to trust everyone around you. By the end of the game you'll have your gun drawn and pointed at the head of everyone you meet just in case. Once you play this game you'll know why PC gamers constantly deride most modern FPS's as "rail shooters". Just make sure to play past the first level in the game. It's not a good representation of what the rest of the game is like and a lot of people get bored in it and stop playing thinking the rest of the game must be just as boring and slow paced.

i purchased the Deus Ex Collection 2 days ago and i have to say it is THE worst purchase i have ever made on a video game. The game is dated so i didn't care if the graphics looked ad i was expecting to play something like maybe fallout 3, morrowwind, oblivion, thief, what have you, and what i got was an overrated pile of **** The gunplay is absolutely aweful, and some may say well its a stealth game blah blah blah, but then i say any game that gives you a freaking rocket launcher int he beggining of the damn game is not a complete stealth game. I have no clue as to how this game got game of the year. I might try and will myself to play it for the story but sof ar their is no story its basically im a future cop agent that is "highly trained superguy" but i can't **** shoot **** with my gun. I mean really this game came out 2 years after half life and it really just stinks. Maybe i am just so used to gameplay mechanics today, but man oh man is it bad.

did i also mention their is no auto save so you better save every 5 **** minutes cuz you will die alot and then go all the **** way back. I made it to the 3rd level because, i was starting to somewhat tolerate the bad gunplay, then i died and wen't all the way back to the first mission. I mean come on it was the year 2000, playstation games had autosaves. Facepalm.

I dont judge you, the game is exactly that, awful combad and prefably go on stealth. The point of the game is the options you have and that you are an agent not some super soldier....you kinda become later. Howver as i said you choose who you want to be. For example you are not "highly trained" to guns. You choose wherever you wanna be "trained" in guns or something else like electronics and use turrets and emp grenades against bots.

Most of my frustrations have to do with the combat really and the autosaving or lack thereoff :x i tried to do stealth and it was working but whenever i ran into a situation when i wanted to combat people it was extrememyl frustrating, i mena how does a gun fromt he future have only 6 rounds in the chamber i mean really? I mean my guy seems so usueless, why the **** would they hire him if he has to wait 15 seconds beofre he shoots a pistol.

I understand your complains completly. I have to admit that i did not remember that the gun has only 6 shots in the begining. Also standing still for many seconds in order to aim is pretty damn annoying. I upgraded my sniperifle to take down enemies in the begining and i either wait behind them and get a headshot with the pistol or use the stun gun. Plus 1 stun hit is not enough, damn this game!!!

To be honest i started playing it because i liked the sci fi idea it had and the story. I did not like the combat, i liked looting stuff, using turrets to kill enemies, play with tranquilizer darts (Which also one hit in the head is not enough  ) or the smoke grenades, hack stuff and enjoy the levels with the npcs.

I guess when it comes to combat, the new deus ex cant be worse than the first. It seems they go for a more action focused gameplay since the main character can turn his hands into various weapons. I just hope that there is some exploration, choices and hacking and lockpicking too.

As for the autosave, well there was autosave in some parts but i ran too into those moments that i had to load a very old save because the game forgot to save

Also its a very long game.

Anyway as i said, i understand your complaints completly and i often feel the same for other pc exclusives such as vampire masquarade or crysis. I just get the feeling that combat is a freaking mess and that the whole game gets down because of that.

I guess i am the only one that agrees with a user that bashes one of his favorite games

That is because i understand the complains and i can understand that you didnt like the game for those reasons. Let me see someone else doing that too in this forum. Something i sadly never see.

The gun combat gets better as you level up your skills and mod your weapons. By the end of the game you'll be at the point where you can no-scope a guy across the map with a sniper rifle and barge into a room with five guys and pump them full of shotgun shells before they have a chance to get a shot off. The weapons in the game become manageable the first time you upgrade the skill, easy to use with the 3rd level up, and awesome once you do the final level up. There's also the augmentations which you get halfway through the game (ie 20 hours in) which is where the tables really start turning. You can get powers like the ability to see through walls, be practically impervious to bullets, detonate rockets and grenades before they reach you, regenerate health, etc. As for autosaving, just set your quick save hotkey. I hit my quick save key every time I do anything remotely important (according to the game I've saved about 400 times now just in one playthrough). Once you get in the habit of quick saving you won't care about autosave (this goes for all PC games as well btw). That said, the controls and weapons are the weakest part of this game. It really is supposed to be a stealth game except in the latter portions and for most of the game your prod charger is going to be your most used weapon since it will take down an enemy quietly in one hit as long as you do it from the back undetected. The other weapons, like the rocket launcher, are something you're supposed to use only in emergencies or special circumstances. Kind of like "oh crap, those four guys saw me, time to bust out the assault rifle" or "I need to get past that heavy bot, guess this is a good time to use the rocket launcher".

Deus Ex is a truly unique game .. Is it still as such for new gamers coming to it today ? probably not .. and why ? .. well ..

There are a couple of stumbling blocks put up right off the bat .. some of which have been discussed so far .. such as graphics, gameplay.

I would suggest anyone who is remotely interested in finding out what it is about the game most people like .. to struggle through the first half-hour to two hours of the game .. get to a point where you gain more skills and advantages .. because quite frankly this game gives you one hell of a rough start .. little to no ammo, no useable skills, etc.

Coming to it unaware of the eventual struggle ahead .. would seriously put someone off .. and make them vent publicly about it LoL .. so it happens .. but trust us when we say it is a good game.

SideNote * the Deus Ex sequel is terrible .. but if you want to further your Deus Ex experience .. try out the Fan Favorite Mod - The Nameless Mod .. a full conversion mod that has one amazing addition .. and EMP pistol .. (for neutralizing all the damn bots, cameras, etc. you have to deal with:P )

Deus Ex is a FPS made for RPG fans. I don't think a non-RPG gamer would enjoy this masterpiece because of the skill based combat system.

Its not a bad game, I modded it to get the graphics at a decent level, I am in hong long and just meet with tracer tong, so far I fail to see what is so great about this game. People say its the best game ever made, I dont see how. Dues =ex 3 looks like it is turning into a killer game and even if it loses some of its rpg elements Im sure I will enoy it more then this one. Dues ex has failed to draw me in at this point, btw wth I modded my machine gun with a silencer and it just dosent make any sound at all now.... lame

Deus Ex is certainly one of the finest games ever created, but in the years since it's creation it hasn't aged brilliantly. I think the graphics and some of the gameplay elements are going to frustrate some modern players if they haven't encountered things like it before. Nonetheless, it is still an amazing adventure which tries to give a large degree of player choice to decisions, which will then affect the dialogue or storylinelater on. If you can accept the game for what it is, and not judge it against the games of today, it is still a remarkably enthralling and captivating game.

 Why people act like that? I mean come on, i love deus ex but there are so many things wrong with this game that you can expect people to complain about it. No, such small things dont ruin the game but it has ton of things that point out its not the perfect game everyone is making it to be and by normal criteria those things will impact the gameplay and the quality value of the game. In other words, please dont throw every negative thing you hear like its so damn important that the game remains flawless that every negative comment is a blasphemy. I mean come on, its not that important to argue about it.

There we go, why you have to mock him about that? Big deal not important. So what he complan about the silencer, a minor complain, but would you prefer a major complain that will start an argument? For me no complain is moronic. Its just not important one to make it such a big deal. For example i would reply : "Yeah silencers are like that , but then again it could be som futuristic silencer technology, but then again they can make guns supersilent but cant make a pistol with more than 6 rounds without upgrading it first :P" See, minor complain. do we have to argue about the fact that the pistol is idioticly low on ammo at the begining and it makes no sense, or we should just let it go?

Arguing? No. Mocking? Yes. Out of all the things you could nit pick about in DX he chooses to complain about the silencer. Moronic. C'mom dakan, let's get an exchange going. Before you know it, this thread will be 10 pages long of you having a hissy fit about PC gamer elitism, developers lying in interviews or why enemies that take multiple bullets completely ruins a game!

I dont think it is "moronic" at all to note that when you "silence" a gun it has no sound, opposed to every other game I play that it sounds like a silence gun. I swear for the life of me I can not understand pc gamers.

^ I feel you bro, many times they get pissed when you make a minor complain for one of those "classic" pc games. Like the game is flawless and your minor on the game either does not matter or its a blasphemy or something. I remember in the demo of far cry the smg had no sound at all and in the full game they made it sound silenced. That was done in order to make the game BETTER and while its a minor thing, it still matters that they polished the game and fixed it. But if the perfect deus ex gets a negative comment, then its open season on whoever said it. Honestly i love deus ex but i can understand all the complains about it, i am not making it a big deal. Like say that in the begining you have to stand still for 5 seconds to get a good shot and if you move, even slowly, you will lose accuracy and keep losing till you stop moving. Weird thing, i dont blame anyone who wants to complain about it. I guess what i am trying to say in the end is that while deus ex was a very nice experiance and it still is, its mechanics are not what you would call "well thought out" and well implemented.

Longer answer: maybe.

] I dont think it is "moronic" at all to note that when you "silence" a gun it has no sound, opposed to every other game I play that it sounds like a silence gun. I swear for the life of me I can not understand pc gamers.Advid-Gamer

How about this: next you are firing your gun make a "pewsh pewsh pewsh" sound with your mouth. That way you won't have to deal with Ion Storms glaring oversight on silenced weapons. Boy, if the silencer is contributing to your lack of enjoyment or immersion in this game I don't see how you're getting past the animations, graphics, blocky models, voice acting and gunplay.

I'll give you a little hint on how to better understand the PC gaming community: stop taking it all so seriously. It'll make things alot clearer.

^Actually i made some weapons in fallout 3 and i forgot to add the sounds, so i did not use them till i go back to geck and fix them. Therefore i think that it trully metters to immersion. Oh and i never used silenced weapons in deus ex for some reason.

Finished this game on 7/16/2000, know this cause of my save file date. Due to Alpha Protocols let down, almost 10 years later, I'm replaying this Deus Ex with some texture and ENB mods.

I am now seeing this game was so ahead of its time gameplay wise its amazing. The amount of content and variety is like 10x most current games. This truly is a PC hallmark game in the ranks of Doom, Thief and System Shock.

Dated GFX never bothered me. The gameplay is what matters. I still play old games like Requiem: AA, Thief 1 and 2, Kingpin: LoC, Blood 2, etc. from time to time. They are nostalgic and still very fun. And yes, Deus Ex is still a very fun game to play.

In my mind, this game is immortal. It still hasn't been surpassed in it's COMBINATION of gameplay elements, and still hasn't been surpassed in it's brilliant setting and storyline. I will keep playing this until I find something that can truly match it.

The gameplay is still top-notch but the game fails in the graphical department.

There aren't any modern FPSs which can match up to it in terms of sheer depth.

did i also mention their is no auto save so you better save every 5 **** minutes cuz you will die alot and then go all the **** way back. I made it to the 3rd level because, i was starting to somewhat tolerate the bad gunplay, then i died and wen't all the way back to the first mission. I mean come on it was the year 2000, playstation games had autosaves. Facepalm.

AlphaJC
Most pc games back then didnt have auto save. I'll take quicksave over autosave anyday.

Honestly I need to go back to this gem. I've played it a few times now, and some levels more than that. If you are pretty tolerant of graphic qualities (especially animation stuff) then you should enjoy it :)
