I'm a HUGE Blizzard fan, but just never got around to playing the Diablo series, and now I just can't bring myself to buy it. Is it worth playing now? Even with the outdated.. everything?

Well Yeah ^^
I am one of the few who liked Diablo 1 more then D2, but they are both still quite good games, that D2 lacks in any story at all, it makes up for in MP, if you plan on playing SP then D2 aint that good, but online with other people, raiding dungeons, trading weapons and kick in the door is a blast ^^
D1 is far more about story, it is a bit slower, but the classes are far more ballanced, since all classes can wield basic weapons and magic, thier stats make the difference.
Id get both... Heck I got multible copies of both :S (yeah I am one of those guys who bought a Diablo BT for my PC and my lappy :P
Just with Starcraft, Diablo II LOD is the best Blizzard game to date, still in the top 25 most played games according to Xfire, and ten times better than WoW in my book. I'm currently playing this game:

...Plus the 1.13 patch is in open beta testing. When D III will arrive -at some point in the next ten years- the whole Internet shall tremble!
Yes. I assume you mean Diablo II with the Lord of Destruction expansion, but either way, both games are still great. I log on every now and then to do some trading and dueling. Also, there is a 1.13 patch comming out at some point that will be changing a lot of things.
Diablo 2 is and always will be a timelessly fantastic game. I actually only really enjoy it in SP - Diablo styIe games on the whole aren't all that enjoyable to me online.
Diablo 1 is not a very good game. Not bad enough for me to say you absolutely shouldn't play it, as there are a couple winks and nods in Diablo 2 at stuff from the first game, but gameplay-wise it's very lacking and full of frustration. You can only face/aim/move in eight directions, so if an enemy is on a "tile" that isn't on one of those eight directional lines from you, you can't attack them with a ranged weapon unless you move to where they are directly lined up with them. The eight direction limitation also makes movement around the environments pretty clunky.
Then there's the whole system of "flinching" the game has. If your dexterity isn't very high, enemies have (1) a high chance of hitting and (2) a very high chance of making you flinch every single time they do hit you. This singlehandedly makes faster weapons always, always better than stronger weapons in the game, because if your weapon is slower than the attack of the enemy making you flinch, they'll just keep hitting you and you'll just keep flinching either until you're lucky and one of their attacks misses/doesn't make you flinch or until you're dead. Worse still is you can't even run when an enemy is making you flinch repeatedly because of the tile movement limitations of the game (which are the cause of the directional limitations - everything happens on an invisible square grid where nothing can take place in between tiles). If you try to move away from an enemy that's making you flinch, he'll simply hit you again before you make it to the next tile, and the game will force you back to the first tile and have you do the flinching animation, over and over and over for as long as you try to run (again, until he misses or until you die). Basically, if an enemy is making you flinch repeatedly, you're as good as dead.
There are other things about the game that aren't great, but all those things relating to limitations caused by the simplistic, grid-based game environment are the real game-breakers for me.
it is worth getting especially Diablo 2. but they look terrible on modern day wide screen monitors because Diablo1 plays only 640x480 at max. and Diablo2 can be played on 800x600 if you have the Lord of Destruction expansion set.
Get Diablo 2 for multiplayer, Torchlight for single-player
Diablo 2 is going to get one final major patch soon from what I understand.
Torchlight is a good mix of Diablo and Diablo 2 from a few guys who actually worked on those games. Much more up-to-date graphics.
Contrary to what Russell said, the original Diablo is an excellent game, but its quite dated now. Still, its soundtrack remains one of the best in PC Gaming ever. Skip over it at this point and move to Torchlight for your single-player.
i'm also someone who enjoyed diablo 1 more then 2 the atmosphere and setting where amazing and the town of Tristam had some great charactersWell Yeah ^^

Yea, I have Torchlight. Just really wanted that type of gameplay, but online. Are there any other games like that? Any newer ones?lordsage77
Nothing better than or as good as Diablo 2. Titan Quest is probably the strongest offering besides it that's more recent.
U should be somewhat aware of the dated graphics. I don't mean to state the obvious about an older game, but I thought I should atleast mention it. Of course - graphics don't make the game - I know this.
I'm A HUGE Diablo II fan, and would suggest anyone to give it a play. Once in a while I get the notion to install and play a bit - but the view of the graphics sort of disappoint me. Especially since I've seen the New - Diablo 3 in action and how great that looks.
I've beenconstantly looking for a graphics mod toadd atleast some better resolution - but I can't find any that exist.
Bottom line though,u should play the D1 and D2 series, but don't expect wows from graphics, jsut try and enjoy the gameplay!!
get both....they are amazing....ive wasted soooooo many months of my life on those games....so addicting...man now i want to play again, looks like im makin a walmart run

Except it excludes you from the best aspect of the game.. Closed battle.netI am one of the few who liked Diablo 1 more then D2 (...)

Really? I think the first one sooooooooo superior that I thought everybody felt this way.
Diablo 1 is delightful to play, extremely atmospheric and immersive. I've played through it a few times with all 3 characters.
Diablo 2 is tiresome. Boring. More of the same all the time and ten times over again and again. Sooner or later you stop pressing forward and caring about how it ends. "You" being "me", of course.
But I must tell you, Diablo 2 is a game I'd love to love, and sooner or later I'll try again...
Diablo has not aged well at all. Unless you get it for $5 or less I would pass. Diablo 2+LOD is still very widely played, though its basically torchlight but with online gameplay and with **** graphics(which all makes sense considering that runic is made up of the guys that made diablo)
not quite, at my walmart for about $40 u get diablo 1, diablo 2, stradagy guides, and poster, or something lol.Well its like 5$ now days :p
KalDurenik
Also whoever it was that said you need to me in the same "line" to hit targets in diablo 1 is wrong. You can hit anything aslong as LOS aint blocked with ranged weapons.
Anyway diablo 1 is overall harder then diablo 2. Diablo 1 is slower and require more thinking then diablo 2 that is only about bashing away 23472380472983 of spawn of darkness.
Edit: What i meant is that diablo 1 is around that price. But then again it depends abit on where you live.

Have you played LoD online? It's a fantastic experience. Oh the hours doing Baal runs seem just like yesterday...Really? I think the first one sooooooooo superior that I thought everybody felt this way.

Agreed, Diablo 2 over Battle.net is the best experience (along with Guild Wars) of any Action RPG to date.
Yes, the original Diablo was great back in the day (it was the game that started it all for me with PC Gaming :) ), but it hasn't aged incredibly well. Yes, the excellent sound in the game gave it a great appropriate creepy Atmosphere, but everything considered, Diablo 2 really is the better game thanks to incredibly addictive multiplayer.
Somehow, Torchlight, while decent, doesn't have the "it" factor of either Diablo game.......can't explain why, but not nearly as addicting.

No, only the original Diablo 2 a couple of times (online, I mean). I don't own the expansion...
But I'm not really into multiplayer, I'm basically a single player gamer and extremely slow-paced: I like to explore every corner, admire the views, read the books and lore (if any), etc. ;)
